Sibal wants all schools to teach Hindi

Posted: Aug 24, 2009 at 1902 hrs IST

New Delhi Union Minister Kapil Sibal on Monday strongly batted for teaching Hindi in all schools, saying fluency in the national language will help integrate students from across the country and it could become the lingua franca once India becomes "producer of knowledge".

"Our education system should change from MOTS (More of the Same) to HOTS (High Order Thinking Skills). We should create knowledge which will be used by other people. Now we are a recipient of knowledge and in the future we should produce the knowledge," the HRD Minister said while addressing the Council of Boards of Secondary Education here.

"Hindi should be taught alongwith the regional language. Some students are exceptionally good in their mother tongues. They should learn other languages too," Sibal said.

He said there was a need to bring a level of quality in education that will generate the knowledge needed for the future. "We should ensure greater emphasis on Hindi. All children are not fluent in Hindi as they are in their mother tongues. Hindi is necessary for students to integrate with the rest of the country. The same students integrate with the rest of world through English," he said.

"Now the lingua franca is English for professionals. When we become producers of knowledge then we can set our language as the lingua franca," Sibal said.

He said it was time for the country to start thinking about the children instead of imposing a system on them.

We want India not Hindia by Srinivasulu on 13 Nov 2009

Enforcing Hindi in non-hindi States have already endangered the non-hindi languages. When you get down the railway stations of Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, you hear only Hindi. We don't hear Kannada or Marathi or Telugu. Out of the urban Metropolis, except for urban cities of TamilNadu, in other cities, Hindi is slowly and silently removing the regional languages. Fortunately, Tamil is saved thanks to Annadurai. After 20 years, only Hindi and Tamil will exists in India as intellectual Tamils will continue to strongly oppose Hindi imposition. People in other States are not intuitive enough to see the impact of giving too much space for hindi in their State. Already their nextgen children are taking their mother-tongue very lightly. We will pray God to somehow save all non-hindi languages from the clutches of hindi chauvinists.

Tamil is India's most International Language by Suresh on 01 Sep 2009

What is the practicality of enforce a language which has four times more alphabets than Tamil and much more complicated number pattern on Tamil. Even, people with Hindi as their mother tongue are not well-versed with Hindi numbers, and Hindi language has the lowest literacy rates and stagnant literature especially in the field of technology, how can anyone expect dumping this language on others. Tamil, being India's simplest alphabet, technologically most active and India's most international language has lot of value in learning. Anyway, it is high time Tamil Nadu follows Karnataka model in enforcing it language policy even in CBSE schools.

Tamil, well, wel by Soumitra Desai on 01 Sep 2009

Tamil, just for those reasons? Well, how many languages do we have, 26 or 32 altogether? Plus one Sanskrit, obviously. So, we stop all other subjects and force our kids to learn them all. Any way, they do not have much future given the current happenings, so why not? Are the teachers from Jaffna that ready then?

Actually India deserves Communist rule by Rohit on 30 Aug 2009

India must be declared a communist country and then force Hindi on these bloody people. Had these people been in China they would all have learned Mandarin and no one would have dared to speak a word againt this. Actually this country is paying the price of being a democracy which is obviously not for Indians. One more solution is to divide this country and let Hindi speaking states become another country and then kick out all these Hindi opposers from this area and give them their small pieces of lands on which they will live.

Yes promote hindi for national respect and integration by Rohit on 30 Aug 2009

Yes, I fully agree with the minister. If we want to show to the world that we are a respectful nation and not shoe lickers of Americans, we need to promote Hindi as the link language of India. Those people who are opposing it are of sick and anti-national mentality. Why don't these bloody people see the fact that promoting some other language including English (it'll eat up our country) will not serve this purpose because Hindi is the most understood language of India and 77% people are competent in this language to various degrees. Actually Hindi haters have only one thing in mind and it is to oppose Hindi at any cost even if it means to lick shoes of Americans. Promotion of Hindi doesnt mean to endanger other languages. If this is the case then how is Catalan not only surviving but thriving in Spanish majority Spain? And one suggestion is, more and more words can be taken from other Indian languages (Urdu is not Indian) to enrich Hindi and make it to be understood across the country.

Hindi it is not,, my friend by Bharadwaj Gajanan on 30 Aug 2009

Hindi it is not any more, are you blind? What you see being circulated as Hindi is its distorted version. Make it pure Hindia as it is upposed to be and may be the people will think about it. But ultimate choice is Sanskrit all the way.

No Hinidi, let us give Geervan Bharati a full try, this time by Soumitra Desai on 27 Aug 2009

We had to learn English as it was essential for the British Plans in order to rule us easily. And it was not a good decision either as we find it now. If you read Veer Savarkar very well, you will realize if we had selected Sanskrit (the language of gods) when a choice was offered to the Indian public, we would be much better off as a whole nation without any perforations caused by the so called regional languages and it would have served as a strong binding cement to all the people of India. Just think how wonderful it would be to be one entity as Indians without any rows because of diversity at least on this account. Let us make up for these mistakes and reach again for that wonderful dream of peace and unity. Hindi can not achieve it, it has failed miserably so far in this regard in my honest opinion. Its Urduization has helped only the Bollywood guys (and Congress for appeasing minorities) who have no scruples any way.

Government should stop pouring money for Hindi by Ranga on 27 Aug 2009

If all Indians are equal, how can the Government frame policies that aid towards making one set of people alone to flourish? The tax collected from Non-Hindi people is used to promote Hindi and flourish North Indians. Be it Bollywood or be it a Central Government Job or the Government aided Business Houses, the primary focus of the Government has always been to help

Now we got what Sibbal meant by Krt on 26 Aug 2009

When our HRD minister Kapil Sibal advocated single board for the entire Nation, some appreciated it without knowing what is back in his mind. He wants every Indian to have similar thinking lines and wants to force every Indian with Hindi. If everyone is produced the same way, there won't be any diversity. Our HRD minister has become a Ethnic Cleansing Minister. He is trying to destroy the diverse identity of India.

Hindi is not Superior by Janaki on 26 Aug 2009

Infact, we need to remove Hindi from CBSE Schools. Let CBSE schools teach English and the Mother Tongue of the State. When the student comes to 8th standard, he can be introduced to all Indian languages briefly along with the attributes of the region where the language is spoken. If the student find a particular language interesting probably because of the rich cultural heritage of the people or because of any special attributes of the region, let him have the option to choose.

Sanskrit it has to be. by Geeta Joshi on 27 Aug 2009

I agree. Hindi is a substandard lame language to be promoted as our national language. English it can never be. Regional languages will spark off more rows than doing any good. All at the end, point to Sanskrit. The best choice, our future generation will benefit immensely from this strong linguistic tool.

Sanskrit, not English, please by Suhasini Joshi on 27 Aug 2009

I disagree, Hindi (not in its current Urdu swaroop) or Sanskrit has to be learned by all proud Indians. We need one national language for sure. English has its own role as a medium of instructions in higher studies and communication with outside world. All other regional languages can be replaced by their mother, Sanskrit. Think on this and you will see what I mean. Painfully enough, I have to point out at Israel, how Hebrew has helped them come under one flag. Painfully, because if we had wise leaders, Israel would be quoting us.

India is not Hindia by Janaki on 26 Aug 2009

If 1% of South Indians have a probability of settling down in UP or Bihar, then let this 1% learn the regional language of UP

Is India a Hindi Nation? by Krt on 26 Aug 2009

Truely speaking, declaring 'Indian' as 'Hindian' is cleansing the multi-ethnic cultural identity of our country.Unfortunately, Hindi chauvinists have spread this "National Language" message loudly and repeatedly that several foreigners and our own current generation think that Hindi is the National language of India. Our constitution have recognized the multi-lingual aspect of our Nation and has declared 21 languages as our National Languages. Referring to Hindi as the sole National language and enforcing it on all is illegal, unfair, selfish and atrocious. All Indians should be treated equally. Selling one particular language alone and asking everyone to buy that, results in an imbalanced situation where culture, history, heritage and business houses of one particular set of people alone get popularized. We need to switch back to our good old "Unity in diversity model".

Hindi Enforcement by Krt on 26 Aug 2009

Unfortunately, post independence, we scrapped this integration model and introduced Hindi as the common language of India and started enforcing the same in all possible ways. The result is very pathetic. Typist and Stenographers sitting in Karnataka region are expected to type or take shorthand in Hindi. Bankers communicating to farmers of remote village in Tamil Nadu gives forms to Tamil farmers in Hindi

Hindi Enforcement by KrtChennai on 26 Aug 2009

Fortunately, Sibbal did not come up with common religion, common dress code etc to integrate India. How can Sibbal say learn Hindi to talk to India? Why define India as a Hindi Nation? This cheap

SIBAL ON hINDI by MOOKHI AMIRr ALI on 26 Aug 2009

Äkkal ki baat

Why do we need another language now? by Mugunth Kumar on 25 Aug 2009

I agree with Sethu Madhavan. BTW, because Hindi is spoken by over 50%, you want it to be the National Language. Will you ever dare to make Hinduism as the sole national religion of India? It's followed by over 80% of Indians... Still India wants to be a "secular" Multi-religious state. Why the hell don't they think about a multi-lingual India? Think of Singapore, Switzerland and other similar multi-lingual countries...Sibal is an IDIOT.."Now the lingua franca is English for professionals. When we become producers of knowledge then we can set our language as the lingua franca,"Outsourcing is popular only because of English. If you think this way, the hard working chinese and brazilians would have already stolen our jobs... Don't bring in your Stupid political stunts here...

Need for Sanskrit by thampi on 25 Aug 2009

Sibal has a point that Hindi be popularised, but we should never forget the importance of Sanskrit. Everyone, foreigners included, have concluded that Sanskrit is the most modern logical language for study of science, mathematics, computer programmes etc. But we in India are neglecting this rich language at our peril.Let us go for a four language formula-mother toungue,Sanskrit, English and Hindi for non-hindi areas; and a non-Hindi language like Tamil, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi or Malayalam or some thing else for Hindi mother tongue students. This will help people of India in the north, south, east and west understand each other better and respect each other, which will ultimately help national integration, making us forget the language, religion and caste divide that thave taken root thanks to V.P. Singh and Manmohan Singh.

stop all these crap.... if you want you learn hindu / sanscrit but don't preach that for the entire country.I know what i have to learn and what my children should, not poeple like you or idot like our politicians. I will learn only english and my mother thongue. hindi - never - ever

Mercy in letting our children have good heritage by Shobha Deodhar on 27 Aug 2009

No mercy was shown to us when Hindi, the the rubbishest of all languages was thrown at us and forced up on us. As for Sanskrit, at the end, our children need to be more proud than us as world's acclaimed citizens with incredible inheritance. If you do not like it, you can always decide to be on the other side. I hope you all get the right photo. There is nothing Hindu about Sanskrit. Even our regional languages all originate from Sanskrit. FYI: Sanskrit is the origin of many Indo-European languages. German is almost Sanskrit. Latin has many Sanskrit words. Some schools in UK have Sanskrit as medium of instructions. We are the stupidest race on earth not to recognise its true value.

Hindi- A majority elected national language by Ashish Bhatnagar on 25 Aug 2009

This is an excellent attempt that our previous leaders dared not to commit. As many S.Indians may think it being thrusted down their throats, then if a central Govt comes having mostly members fm North, due to majority what will they say. India has many lang off course, but Hindi is the only language that holds speakership more than 50%. No language in S.India is acceptable to even 4 Deccan states. Then even if say Hindi

Hindi is substandard by Shank Vagal on 26 Aug 2009

Be careful, Ashish. Unless you want to initiate a dhamaka between North

HINDI IS NOT OUR NATIONAL LANGUAGE by Deb Majumdar on 25 Aug 2009

Well my friend you should go back and read the constitution. Hindi is not our national language but the language of the union along with english which means it does not need to be used anywhre else other than in central govt offices. It is clearly a misconception that has been propagated by hindi chauvinists in the name of rastra bhasha. What the BIMARU states want is the rest of the country to follow in their corrupt footsteps. Unfortunately this is not to happen. If Kapil sibal has his way it will lead to a fragmentation of the country

Sibal jealous of South's progress in Education and Technology; wants to slow our kids by Forcing Hindi, Hopes Hindi kids will catch up with our south kids in Math/Science.Dream on Kapil. by Setu Madhavan on 25 Aug 2009

This is Sibal's attempt to thrust Hindi down the throats of South Indians. Also hidden in this agenda is slowing down the strides the south is making in Education, Science and Technology. What he actually seems to ask is 'Why are Southern states doing so well in Science and Mathematics that North is not able to catch up?', and 'What can I do to slow down the South, so the children in the North do not feel left behind as the South marches ahead'.He smacks of sheer jealousy and frustration at South's knowledge and technology base that is being recognized worldwide. Fully aware that English has played a pivotal role in South's progress, he is questioning 'Why is it that South Indians are so proud and well versed in their Mother tongue, as well as English, but are least interested in HIndi. So lets slow the South kids down with Hindi, and then get our North Kids to learn the same Math and Science that these south kids learn. Sorry, Sibal, your north kids can never catch up with our kids.

Hindi - Link Language by Pravin Mhapankar on 25 Aug 2009

India is Multi-lingustic, racial, caste country. If we read 8th Schedule of Indian Constitution, there is not a single line state that, Hindi is National Language of India. But communication purpose Hindi to be propogate link language. Mr.Sibal should advice every state that they should accept three language formula, like our state i.e.Maharashtra. Hindi speaking states also accept this formula, so if this formula to be accepted (i.e.every school of Hindi state to be teach one south language like, Marathi or Bengali or Tamil etc), then not a single south state to be oppose to learn Hindi.

Sibals wanting HIndi by Rammohan on 25 Aug 2009

If Sibal wants Hindi to be taught through out India especially in South India, let him also impose a Southern Language to be taught compulsorily in North India for better integration. Let us be multilingual like Swiss.

Sibals wanting HIndi by Ashish Bhatnagar on 25 Aug 2009

Can you select any one of the 4 dravid languages, with even deccan consensus? Clearly No. Then be practical

U be practical and teach your north indian illiterated to read and write first! by Setu Madhavan on 25 Aug 2009

So what is your problem with people speaking their own mother tongue? Why do you lose sleep if someone is not speaking your mother tongue? Now since 80% of INdians are Hindu, would you want to force the remaining 20% to convert to HInduism? How about teaching your own Hindi illiterate people to write and read their own mother tongue - HINDI.

Hindi? by Geo on 25 Aug 2009

To me, there is no difference between Hindi and English. Both are Greek to me. I learned both voluntarily. It is useful too. (Hindi at times). But the moment someone says I should learn it and worst speak it, I feel sorry for them.

Hinidi learning by Thampi on 25 Aug 2009

I suggest Sanskrit teaching be made compulsory all over the country, as everyone, including foreigners find it the most modern for scientific teaching, computer software etc. Hindi can continue as it is, but it can never reach the position of Sanskrit. As in Europe everyone should learn a minimum of four languages, viz,Sanskrit, English, mother toungue and a south Indian language for Hindi speaking or Hindi for south Indian kids. This helps national integration in this age when the government itself is guilty encouraging religious and caste differences among the people.

NO HINDI by krishna on 25 Aug 2009

Sibal should stop fanning the fire, bu talking about HINDI. It is divisive not unifier. Let people chose the language. Hindi with others only one of the national language

Let the hindi speakers learn south indian languages by vijay on 25 Aug 2009

All the hindi speakers want to do is to breed without any constraint and occupy other regions. Let them learn a south indian language. If the non-hindi speakers learn their mother tongue, english and hindi; why should the hindi speakers learn just hindi and english - isn't this discrimination based on curriculum over load ?Besides, india was NEVER a single "nation" before the british came. Simply put, I don't see a reason for me to give up a language 1000s of years old for a country that is less than 70 yrs old and a creation of colonialism.

Hindi by Kshitij Jain on 25 Aug 2009

Its a great start...a good way of crushing regionalism and linguism in India....and a great start to promote hindi language...Regionalism and linguism had cause a great harm to congress and country ..by doing this...sibal had prove his worth...He is one of the most capable HRD minister till yet...wish he had made much earlier the HRD minister...simply i love congress

No Hindi even for Congis by Unnikrishnan Naghwar on 27 Aug 2009

Love Congress, I can understand with a very very great difficulty. But why the corrupt substandard Hindi, I say. What is in it that attracts you as our own?

Forget promotiong Hindi, how about promoting education in Hindi belt! by S P Madhavan on 25 Aug 2009

Kshitij, Only one sentence of your response spoke had any truth in it.."a great start to promote hindi language..". That is exactly what Kapil Sibal's aim is. To promote his mother tongue, by pushing it down the throats of South Indians. Sorry not going to happen. They tried it in the 50s n 60s and we created hell for you! Yes you seem to love him because he is promoting your mother tongue. Which is natural, nothing patirotic about it. Would you be as excited if Tamil or Malayalam was forced on the Cow belt BIMARU (Bihar, MP, Rajasthan, UP...Jharkahan) zone...which btw is the most underdeveloped part of this country - and as per UNDP's Human Development Indices report, the most underdeveloped part of planet earth, even behind sub saharan Africa!!! That little piece of statistic should convince you that there is no direct co-relation between speaking in Hindi and National pride (unless you equate lack of progress and education with national pride).Since you love congress - and seem to be a Deshbhakt and Sidhdhantvadi (man of principles), why dont you go and teach your north indian brothers and sisters to read and write in Hindi, before asking literate south indians to learn to read and write in Hindi. I think the country would do a lot more progress if the citizens from cowbelt would be educated. Dont you think so?

sibal's hindi policy by sushil verma on 25 Aug 2009

Language is one of the most powerful sources of integrating a society but not in this case. Hindi, though is spoken and understood by the majority of us in India, it is just one of the many other languages that are spoken in the country, albeit the largest. A Hindi speaker, like Sibal, says everyone in India should larn Hindi, A Tamil speaker will say Tamil, and a Bengali speaker would insist on Begali. Their claims carry equal validity. Language is an issue of identity and pride. Giving more importance to one language is going to be seen as imposition and liguistic dominance. So far from being an integrative idea it is going be divisive. It has happenend in the past. Does not the Congress Party remember lanuguage riots of the 50s and the 60s and strong movements for liguistic states. Government will be well advised not to stir the hornets'nest. Learn the lesson from the past. India is polyglot and will stay polyglot. Do not repeat the mistake of the past, Mr. Sibal.

Why does Sanskrit not come to our minds? by Sajjan Pandit on 31 Aug 2009

But all will accept Sanskrit willingly, rest assured of that. Even if it looks out of reach now. But English also was so at one time - alien as it is. But the energetic Brits pushed it down our throat. That's what we will do and achieve the final glory.
