Twenty years after it was built, the state government has given its nod to the cleaning of Sidhwan Canal, which flows from the city till Doraha.
A budget of Rs 4.35 crore has been prepared by the Canal department and has been approved by the government. The cleanliness drive, however, could not take off because of code of conduct implementation, said officials.
But the conclusion of the election process has not come as any relief. The drive is not likely to begin until September as the paddy season begins from June 10 wherein, officials say, water will have to be supplied to the farmers for irrigation.
Amarjit Dullet, Superintending Engineer (SE), Canal department said: “Our project has been approved by the government. This is the first time that a cleanliness drive will be carried out on the canal that now lies deeply polluted.”
A stretch of 50 kms will be cleaned under the drive. Officials added that the work will begin immediately after September because tenders have been called in for and estimates are ready. The work orders, however, will be given after June 2 when rules under the code of conduct are withdrawn.
Though the canal has become a dumping ground for the city, it also needs to be repaired from many sides. Sources said lack of funds was the only reason behind the delay in repairing works.
A local NGO had also initiated a cleanliness drive on the canal but scrapped it half way. Sources said since the government is planning to make an express highway along the canal, the cleanliness drive will be carried out first. Dullet, meanwhile, advised people to stop polluting the canal as crores are going to be spent on the cleanliness drive.
