Sas Nagar, March 11 A Sub inspector of CBI from Delhi, Joginder Prasad, today recorded the statement of Gurcharan Singh, a resident of Balongi (Mohali), who was a victim of the riots against Sikhs in Delhi on November 1, 1984.

He was thrown in a burning truck to be burnt alive, but was saved by his neighbours. Even after 23 years, he is handicapped due to the burn injuries he received.

His advocate Navkiran Singh, President of All India Sikh Students Federation, Karnail Singh Pir Mohammad and Tarlochan Singh Nambardar of village Balongi, accompanied him. It is pertinent to note here that Gurcharan Singh has revealed that Sajjan Kumar, Congress MP, instigated the public to kill Sikhs and to demolish the religious monuments of Sikhs under his constitution in Delhi.

Prasad reached the house of Gurcharan Singh in Ekta Colony, Zirakpur at

around 10am today along with a questionnaire of 80 questions relating to the incident on November 1, 1984.

The Mohali police maintained tight security outside Gurcharan’s house and no one, including the media were allowed inside till the recording of statement was over. Prasad refused to talk to media persons after coming out of the house and soon after left for Delhi.

Afterwards, Navkiran Singh, advocate of the witness, while talking to media said that Gurcharan Singh told that his father Natha Singh was the president of Gurdwara Gulabsar in Janakpuri, Delhi, when the mob, led by Sajjan Kumar, reached at his place and set his truck afire.

His uncle was killed by the mob from Bulandshaher. The mob after severely beating up Gurcharan, threw him into the burning truck, but he was saved by his neighbours. He suffered major burn injuries but the police took him to a goverment hospital only after three days. Gurcharan filed a complaint against Sajjan Kumar in his FIR, but the police removed his name from the FIR,” Navkiran Singh said.

He also added that 23 years later, Gurcharan has not been paid any compensation and he himself had never approached the police to record his statements against the political high ups. Now when the SGPC has agreed to provide security for the witnesses, Gurcharan Singh made up his mind to speak up.

Nambardar Tarlochan Singh, who was present during the recording of Gurcharan’s statement, said that he will provide a compensation of Rs 20,000 to him.
