New Delhi, March 19 The Friends of Tibet organised a silent march in Delhi University on Wednesday to show their solidarity with people in Tibet protesting against Chinese rule since the 49th anniversary of Uprising Day on March 10th.

They also sought the release of 50-60 Tibetan students from DU, arrested on Saturday for protesting in front of the Chinese Embassy. “We want to inform people in the university about what is happening in Tibet, as many of them are not aware of the situation,” said Tenzin Namdol, a 23-year-old Friends of Tibet volunteer.

More than a hundred DU students, among them Tibetans, Indians and a few foreign students, took a round of the campus before attending a function at the starting point of the march, the Arts faculty. “Students made speeches in support of Tibet and then NDTV organised a group discussion with 20-30 students on what needs to be done in Tibet,” said law student Tenzin Thompa.

The demonstrators also sought the release of the Tibetan students arrested on Saturday, who have been detained in Tihar Jail. “We are trying to get them released tomorrow itself,” said Jigney Ashi, Regional Tibet Youth Congress (RTYC) member in-charged of the student working community. He was optimistic and said Indian authorities would agree. “Exams are coming soon and they need to prepare for them,” he said. According to the RTYC, 200-250 Tibetans study in DU. “Most live in the Tibet Youth Hostel in Rohini,” said Ashi.

When asked if the DU Foreign Students’ Association (FSA) supported the demonstration, its secretary Ilyas Noor said: “We can’t support all these political issues. The FSA is a cultural association that aims to bring together students from all over the world.”
