Kolkata, October 1 The Singur imbroglio is not likely to deter the prospective US investors to invest in West Bengal, said John Davison, Minister-Counselor for Economic Affairs at the US Embassy in New Delhi.

“There is not any apprehension among US industrialists about investing in Bengal,” he said at an interactive session of the Indian Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday.

The US Consul General in Kolkata, Beth A Payne, said:

“Investors look for transparency and stability before making investment. If these factors are absent, there could be some hesitation.”

Regarding Singur project, Davison said: “Tata Motor’s Nano car is being widely reported in US media. It is not just a car, it symbolises the maturity of growing Indian middle-class and their aspirations for an inexpensive car.”

He assured that the crisis in the US economy will not have an adverse impact on the Indian economy. The US administration is drawing up a rescue package to restore the institutions, he said.Davison visited the Frito-Lay factory at Sankrail in Howrah on Wednesday.

“It is astounding that the factory came up in only eight months. More impressive was that many of the employees were youths,”he added.
