Kolkata, May 14 The West Bengal State Election Commission was flooded with complaints of ballot snatching and booth capture from districts that went to polls on Wednesday in the second phase.

A repoll may be ordered in 33 booths spread across the districts of Nadia, Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas. “We have received complaints against many booths. We are waiting for the final report on the basis of which we might consider ordering a repoll,” said S N Roychowdhury, Secretary, State Election Commission.

Disruptions in the poll process have been reported from 15 booths in Basanti in South 24 Parganas, six booths in Canning, one in Kultali, two in Jaynagar, two in Budge Budge and one in Magrahat.

In North 24 Parganas, reports of disruptions and tension poured in from one booth in Swarupnagar and two booths in Gaighata. Hooghly saw a relatively peaceful polling with only two cases of ballot paper snatching in booths in Tarakeswar being reported. There was one such case in Nadia’s Kaliganj. In Howrah, there were allegations of ballot boxes being thrown into a pond.

If a repoll is ordered, it will be held on May 18 or later. In the second phase, the polling was slow as compared to last year.

Till 5 pm, there was 55 per cent polling in South 24 Parganas, 60 per cent in North 24 Parganas, 60 per cent in Howrah and 60 per cent in Hooghly. In Nadia district, the polling percentage was 61 per cent till 3 pm. In Singur, the polling process went on without a glitch.
