While some condemned Mamata Banerjee’s stubborn attitude and urged her to come to the negotiating table for an amicable solution, others blamed Chief Minister Buddahdeb Bhattacharjee for allegedly serving the interests of industrialists and landlords:

The first time Chief Minister sent a letter to Mamata Bandopadhaya, she should have agreed to sit for talks. Now at least she should agree. Unless both parties discuss openly there can be no solution. She is consistently insisting on the return of 400 acres land to be given back before she sits for discussion but she is being stubborn. Discussion is needed on that issue too. If the Tata’s leave it might not be much of a benefit to the farmers. During the police firing in Nandigram, the intellectuals and citizens without any political affiliations had taken to the streets, as they believed injustice was done. It is not necessary to stage a michil every time.
Tarun Sanyal
We plead to both sides to discuss the issue and come up with a solution. About 400 acres of land have been forcefully taken from the small and medium farmers and should be returned. The government is looking at the interest of the absentee landlords and the rich business community, who have united against the poor farmers. It is a question of ethics. We took the streets for Nandigram and might have to take the streets again for Singur.

We, from Swajan, have already sent a letter to Mamata Banerjee and today we are sending one to the Chief Minister asking for an appointment from both to understand what is the problem of Singur and its situation is. Mamata has responded and we are supposed to meet her this evening at Singur. If CM gives us an appointment we will meet him too. We have been standing up for the people of Singur since 2006 and we took the streets for Nandigram to protest against the atrocities from an apolitical standpoint.
Kaushik Sen
The state government had created the problem itself. Trinamool already had a moral victory. They should now sit for talks. The state government should not be adamant on the issue of not giving back 400 acres. We do not want the Tatas to go, but we are more concerned about the rights of the farmers.
Bibhas Chakraborty
We want the 400 acres of land to be returned to the unwilling farmers of Singur.
Soumitra Chattopadhyaya
I do not want to comment on the Singur issue.
