Lucknow Samajwadi Party workers protesting against the alleged extortion by the BSP for the birthday celebrations of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati clashed with police in Lucknow on Thursday.

SP workers, who were taking out a procession from the party headquarters under state party president Shivpal Singh Yadav and MP Bhagwati Singh, were stopped by security forces near the Vidhan Bhawan and it resulted in a clash between the party activists and police.

Police resorted to mild force when SP workers tried to break the barricade while going to the district headquarters at Kaiserbagh, Superintendent of Police (Lucknow West) Paresh Pandey said. However, the party claimed that police used batons to quell the protestors.

Lambasting the state government, UP spokesperson of the party Rajendra Chaudhary said, "SP workers were peacefully demonstrating against the State Government as everyone in a democracy has the right to protest but the police mercilessly beat up the SP activists and many of them started bleeding." "The present condition of Uttar Pradesh is worse than an emergency," claimed Chaudhary.

Samajwadi Party is observing Mayawati's birthday as 'thu thu diwas' (spitting day) to protest against the alleged extortion by BSP workers for the birthday of their party chief.

The district administration had deployed security forces in large numbers around various political party offices and the Vidhan Bhawan.
