Kolkata, August 10 Six people were seriously injured when a taxi collided with a truck near Lake Town on VIP Road on Sunday morning. The taxi was heading towards the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport from Ultadanga, when it rammed into the truck moving in front.

According to the police, the speeding truck came to a sudden halt while trying to take a U-turn. The taxi driver lost control and rammed into the truck.

The injured were first admitted to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Later, the condition of two injured persons deteriorated and they had to be transferred to BR Singh Hospital and SSKM Hospital. Both the driver and the helper of the truck have been arrested.

Following the increasing number of accidents on VIP Road, officials of the transport department and the Public Works Department had decided to clamp down speed limit to 40 kmph. Errant drivers, however, seem to be unnerved by this norm.

“A few signboards have been put up along the road declaring the speed limit. But no one seems to adhere to it and no penalties are imposed on drivers flouting the speed limit norm,” said Biswajit Raha, a resident of Kaikhali on VIP Road.
