Ludhiana, January 31 Six persons were awarded life imprisonment in a double murder case by the court of Additional Sessions Judge MS Virdi.

The convicted persons include Sidhwan Bet-based Lal Singh, his son Paramjit Singh, son-in-law Satnam Singh, Gajjan Singh, Sardara Singh and Gurdip Singh. These persons have been sentenced on the charges of killing Harbhajan Singh of Bhaini Gujra village and Albel Singh of Sunet village, in June 1997.

The case was registered by the Sidhwan Bet police station in June 1997. The judge has also ordered each of them to pay Rs 22,000 as fine.

The judge held that the prosecution has successfully proved that the accused murdered Harbhajan Singh and Albel Singh.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred following a conflict over possession of land between the parties, and civil cases were also going on between them. Earlier, the accused men were cultivating the land. The complainant had stated before the court that he and Albel Singh had joint land measuring over 6 kilas in Ghunewal Bhaini Gujra village. The land was purchased from Bahal Singh, Lamberdar, and they were in possession since 1995. A tent was affixed on the land as temporary residence. They were constructing a room near the motor in fields.

On June 7, 1997 at about 7 pm, the accused men attacked and beat Albel Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Chamkaur Singh and Ravail Singh, who used to reside in the tent, and put the tent on fire. Later the injured were taken to Civil Hospital, Jagraon, but two out of them could not be saved. The men pleaded innocence and claimed false implication. They claimed that the complainants had attacked and even killed one Swaran Singh.

After hearing the arguments on both sides, the judge held that the circumstances did not disclose that whether Swaran Singh died in the same occurrence or not. Even if it had happened and police had not registered any FIR, then a criminal complaint could have been filed against the culprits. Moreover, there were no injuries found on the body of accused, if they were attacked as they had claimed, observed the judge. The accused were sentenced accordingly.
