It’s not everyday that you can get a celebrity to toss up a meal for you or for that matter turn the skewers over the grill. So it was a welcome surprise to see Pooja Bedi play the Chef’s role, albeit for a teeny-weeny bit of time, at the all-new restaurant in town - Barbeque Nation - on Monday night. The queen of television talk shows, who can rustle up candid conversations at the drop of a hat, came dressed in a figure-hugging, sequin-dropping, flaming red churidaar-suit teamed with sky-high golden stilettos. And did she turn heads? Of course. Pooja took to the grill and was an instant hit with the bevy of cricketers from the Indian Cricket League, some of whom like Mahmood Azhar was present with his wife and darling of a daughter. So as everyone slapped on the dressings, turned the grills and dug into the melt-in-the-mouth starters, we chatted up the lady and here’s where lay the surprise. “Of course, I can cook and very well at that,” mentioned Bedi who tells us how she signed up for all possible cookery classes after her marriage to her former husband. “I learnt Mexican, Chinese, Thai, Mughlai...everything under the sun. And I pretty much enjoyed it. Even now, when I travel and if I sink my teeth into something yummy, I have to come home and try my hands at making it,” said Pooja as she obliged a teenager with an autograph, one of the many she dished out for the evening to eager men as well!

“I love the adulation I get in Chandigarh. It’s always a pleasure to be here,” mentioned the ex-Sanawarian who remembers digging into hamburgers at Hot Millions during the occasional outings from school. Now, she’s got kids of her own and no they didn’t accompany Mom on this trip. “If my children were to travel as much as I do they would miss school so much they would end up becoming delinquent!” laughs the mother of two with her hands doing most of the talking. So is dance taking a backseat for now? “Nach Baliye was very exhausting. But it was a great learning experience. It’s made me so popular and I have found fans all the way in the UK, Dubai...wherever the Star network goes. I have realised that television is so far reaching,” admits the host of ‘Just Pooja’, a talk show on Zoom that’s just wound up. “I really enjoyed my show. In fact I have now sent in some proposals to various channels for another talk show. I am keeping my fingers crossed on that.” And she’s making a conscious decision to steer away from just celebrity guests and issues. “I want to raise issues of the common man. Be it female foeticide or homosexuality...I want to host a show like Oprah Winfrey,” admits the spunky Bedi who is not going to be making any attempts at Bollywood. “Been there and done that. Television is now my playing field,” comes Pooja’s instant reply. But from what she tells us, current boyfriend Haneef Hilal is aiming for the big screen. “As for me, I would like to host a travel show as well. Not the usual ‘what, where and how to reach types’ but one with a twist. I have something in mind, let’s see which channel hooks on,” the bindaas Bedi signs off for now.
