Mumbai, January 29 Skipper Alpesh Jamjani did what his top order batsmen failed to do –stay at the wicket – as Springfield Rizvi made 217 for seven with the skipper still battling with 105 against IES VN Sule Guruji on the opening day of the MSSA Giles Shield (Elite Division) final played at Elf ground, Oval Maidan, here on Tuesday.

The Rizvi skipper’s decision to bat first, appeared to backfire as their top order batsmen crumbled before the fine medium pace bowling Pranav Pedamkar with barely 63 runs on the board. It could have been still worse had Alpesh not been dropped in the slips before he could open his account. Later he got another reprive when he was dropped at fine leg when he was on 92.

Alpesh together with Prithvi Kakar revived Rizvi’s hopes with a a fighting sixth wicket stand, which realized 50 runs before Prithvi was out caught behind off rightarm spinner Sarvesh Lokegavkar for 30.

They lost another wicket when the next man Ravindra Bharti was run out in a mix-up. However, Alpesh found Vikas Singh quite determined as the pair remained together at close. Medium pacer Pranav Pedamkar, who rocked the top order, ended the day with three for 22 off 19 overs.

Brief scores: Springfield Rizvi 217 for 7 (Alpesh Ramjani n.o. 105, Prithvi Kakar 30; Pranav Pedamkar 3 for 22 ) vs IES Sane Guruji.
