One of the commuters said that the 23-year-old gunman identified as Rahul Raj, went on screaming subsequently that he had nothing against the passengers and only wanted to ‘take on’ Raj Thackeray.
"He (Raj) then made some passengers write in chits, and kept on dropping it from the bus stating that he had come to attack Raj Thackeray. The person also kept demanding for a mobile phone," the terrified passengers said adding that the gunman was later shot dead by the police.
Recounting the terror, another passenger, Abdul Rashid Sheikh, said, "I was sitting on the upper deck of the bus when I heard some screams... I saw this man (Raj) trying to strangle the conductor with some kind of a chain and then he let him go... After that he shot one of the passengers for no reason."
"All of us ducked down under the seat and we were very scared since we didn't know if the police was to start firing," Sheikh, an employee with a local bank and a resident of suburban Andheri, who was travelling with his wife Rafia, said.
"There were nearly 15 passengers on the upper deck of the bus. He first tried to take my wife out but then apologised to her, seeing she was woman, and said that he (Raj) would escort her out of the bus," Sheikh said.
"I refused to let her (Rafia) go since I was scared that she could be hit in any crossfire that might take place," the bank employee, who was taking his wife to visit a doctor, said.
"We then heard some sounds of shooting and later heard that he (Raj) was dead," Sheikh added.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police Milind Bharambe said that the gunman repeatedly asked to speak with the City Police Commissioner and also wanted to kill Raj Thackeray.
"We found two (currency) notes, a fifty rupee and a ten rupee, on which it was written, "I only want to kill Raj Thackeray and no one else," Bharambe said.
The currency notes were recovered from near the bus when the hostage drama was unfolding.

The chief ministers of Gujarat, and Maharshtra should do their utmost to encourage this. Kolkata has the entire infrastructure to become a thriving vital financial centre. The politicians in these states should give up the petty politics for the greater good of the people so that they need not go far in search of jobs and face unnecessary hardships. The people of West Bengal aught to aim high to make their state as an ultra modern Indian State with Kolkata as its financial nerve centre.
And they want us to welcome such dangerous idiots in Maharashtra.....!

Bihar gunman case could have been handled more professional way instead of barbaric way killing an innocent person like Rahul Raj.It is shame on Maharastra police handling the case.
I am ashamed of the herd mentality of Indian people. Most of the folks here are responding to media;s portraying of Raj Thackeray. I have seen both his speeches live on TV and what he actually said has been portrayed by the media in the wrong way....anyway it is a fashion to read the news and form opinion that certain type of people are rabid. As an Indian I too used to form my opinions based purely what the media says, but after some incidences 10 years back, I form my own independant opinion.

Will states like Bihar and UP implement such laws against vandalism of public property in their own states? Political parties like RJD, LJP, SP, BSP etc also must be held accountable for the violence, destroying public and national property. All these “bhaiya” people only shout when they find an outside enemy, but conveniently remain mum when they need to fight corruption and crime within themselves. These people are hell bent to go and destroy others place but never demand (from its political leaders) to improve situation in their own states.

What Raj is doing is perfectly fine with the people who elect governments in Mumbai and for MH. If Raj is guilty for demanding protection of jobs for local people, then ANY political leader from Bihar and UP is 1000 times more criminal for dividing the country in caste and religion basis, lack of any civilization and basic knowledge of governance. Unlike Raj, Bihari leaders like Yadavs and Paswans ruined their own state, robbed their own people and even cattle were not spared and now desperately after ruining the few remaining islands of prosperity in India. Bihar is one of the richest states so far natural resources are concerned and we all can see what they have made that rich state, just a hell. Mainstream India media (mainly Hindi and English media) is highly biased and sustain the propaganda against any movement to protect local culture and rights of local people as if they are terrorists, be it in MH or Assam or any other state.

What if the rest of india expelled all the maharashtrians and Andhra pradesh created a port city with an international airport with facilities for large business houses. I am sure most businesses would not like to survive in a hostile environment created by maharashtrians and would quickly move out of mumbai. Over a period of 10 years, i think, we would be able to create a second business hub like mumbai. Why Bombay police did not shot down Raj Thackeray if they are so bold ?
Marathi is an offshoot of Hindi and Sanskrit, then why Raj and his coterie wants to fight against mother tongue.
This was a fake encounter enacted by Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil. RR Patil should be held responsible for this murder of a young Indian. After this murder will Mulayam, Amar, Mamata will agitate for a judicial probe - A big ?? mark.
