Bangalore Faced with criticism for delay in showing respect to slain NSG commando Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan on Sunday called on the soldier’s family members here, but a depressed father of Sandeep declined to accept his condolences.

The opposition parties in Kerala have accused the state Government of having shown disrespect to the Kerala-born soldier, who lost his life while combating terrorists in Mumbai, by not sending any minister to his funeral, attended by a large number of people, including Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, here on Saturday.

Achutanandan accompanied by Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan rushed to the city this evening.

As Sandeep’s father Unnikrishnan remained firm that no politician should enter his house and refused to meet the dignatories from his own state, police persuaded Dhanalakshmi, mother of the slain commando, to talk to the guests. Amid continued protests from Unnikrishnan, Balakrishnan gave words of comfort to Dhanalakshmi and Achuthanandan followed him.

Sources close to Unnikrishnan said he even went to the extent of issuing a threat that he would commit suicide if any politician entered his house. He had told his friends that his son, whose valour was witnessed by the entire country, did not belong to Kerala alone but to the entire nation.

No one will understand the value of sacrifice by jeeva on 02 Dec 2008

kerala CM should send his own son(if he has a son) or a close person in NSG

vs by rajesh on 02 Dec 2008

Some comments I saw , it is just with out understanding the situation. It was not fare from VS also that he commented saying even dogs could not have turned to his if it was not sandeep. Dear CM at least you should control your emotion.Dont make it public spat any more, it is shame for keralites and whole country.

dont make public spat anymore. by Rajesh.R on 02 Dec 2008

We respect the brave people , We should really stand with sandeeps brave act, We salute the bravery.I am an anti communist, I dont have any sympathy for Achuthanadan as personel, I am really against him as personel. But the incident occured at sandeep house is really needs criticism, We can understand the emotions of a father who lost his son.But the incident that created by unnikrishnan against Kerala CM is Unacceceptable. If unnikrishan really dont want polititians to enter his house why he allowed all karnataka ministers. Only it seems a personal ego working behind it because no ministers from kerala did not attend the funeral and Unnikrishnan was shouting , run the camera when the incident happend .I just cant understand why he shouted to run the camera when he was saying the bad words against CM.We salute the bravery of sandeep and it is unmatchable, but you should really understand He came as CM. If you dont respect CM (any difference in kerala CM or KArnataka CM).

Hail CM by Anu on 02 Dec 2008

He as well as Deshmukh have lived up to their posts as CMs (CHEAP Ministers) Hail both of them!

Honorable Father by Parvathi on 02 Dec 2008

Mr. Ram Chary- lose your only son and have politicians show disrespect and I want to see you say this again. Kindly refrain from making objective remarks. My remark has nothing to do with the mood of the country but is based on basic human values.

Should a martyrs father be allowed to be uncivil? by Ram Chary on 02 Dec 2008

Does being the father of a martyred hero excuse a person from being civil to visitors who have come to their doorstep to offer condolences? On the day of Sandeeps martyrdom, Mr.Unnikrishnan said he would like whatever military honours are due to Sandeep - but nothing flashy as Sandeep would not like it. Why then is he all worked up at the Kerala CM not arriving for the funeral, but a few days later? And is this the way to behave against any visitor - CM or not? The CM's words were badly chosen, I admit, but it is Mr.Unnikrishnan who is primarily to blame for lowering the dignity of his son's martyrdom. I know this will not go down well in the current mood of the country - but I do think we should not lose our balance of judgement here.

Re: by Sanjeev on 02 Dec 2008

Being a martyr's father doesnt excuse a person from being civil to visitors who have come to their dorrstep to offer "so called condolences", imagine when all the police men, "dog squad" and other people come in to check for security before a CM visits that house, what will be the mindset of that father!?? Why do these politicians go and visit such places with huge battalion of force and create unwanted trouble to the family. they will get irritated. We should try to understand that.

i am agree with you by Achint on 02 Dec 2008

Mr. ram , you are rightly said, but todays NETAS are so selfish and corrupt that everyone wants to speak abuses, but we all knows how todays policticial are lowring their speech and beheviour.

Slain Major's father snubs Kerala CM by Harish Balakrishnan Marar on 02 Dec 2008

yes,Unnikrishnan did the right thing. Till people had been passive and these politicians took everything for granted. Doesnt it our governments duty to be present and pay homage to hero. I think, his act was well a good sign, a clear sign to all those toothless policians that do not take us for granted all the time.

Unnikrishnan as brave as his son by Ashok@Internet on 02 Dec 2008

The worst thing came from CM Kerala saying "...even a dog will not go to Martyrs house."This is the way..If you people see the video of original incident you can look for yourself a martyrs father blocked to enter his own home, the CM and his followers forgot to follow simple courtesy how to act with such a fellow who lost his only son to Nation. In nutshell I only want to say Honorable Unnikrishnan don't deserve this type of treatment from CM Kerala and others making him accuse.

Slain Major's father snubs Kerala CM by Rohit Bhatia on 01 Dec 2008

Kerala cm's remarks on MAJOR SANDEEP by RAJIV R KOLWALKER on 01 Dec 2008

Little did Kerala CM know that he to is an individual suseptible to the rage of a father who just lost his son to the bullets of the terrorists. The subsequent statement made by the kerala CM shows how removed he and his advisors are from what the nation as a whole is currently going through. By saying that even a dog would not have visited MAJOR SANDEEP'S house had he not died speaks very little of the cm but might speak a great deal of the State of Kerala which he represents unless the people of the great state of Kerala rise against such cm which they do not deserve.

Kerala CMs Statement for major Sandeep by Yeshwant Jain on 01 Dec 2008

Kerala CM Achyutanandan should immediately resign and seek medical attention regarding mental health, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, otherwise what next he will vommit out of his mouth, even he can't imagine.

SANDEEP UNNIKRISHNAN by RAMESH on 01 Dec 2008

MR UNNIKRISHNAN I SALUTE YOU FOR YOUR BOLD STEPS BY REFUSING TO MEET THESE SOCALLED LEADERS FROM KERALA. THESE ARE THE SAME LEADERS WHO HAVE SHARED A STAGE WITH TERRORIST LIKE MADANI (COIMBATORE BLAST ACCUSED). I SALUTE YOUR BRAVE STEPS SIR. MY HEARTFELT CONDOLENCE TO THE BEREAVE FAMILY. VANDE MATARAM

refusal to meet kerala cm by ganesh iyer on 01 Dec 2008

Well done mr. unnikrishnan, even at times like this you have remained brave, only sons and daughters of ministers are killed in terror attack they will understand it .

Its time we did the right thing ! by Manoj Nair on 01 Dec 2008

I am a Malayalee so i can understand the feeling if someone represents the thought of an average Keralite however i beg to differ on Prashants point cause i know that there are lakhs of ppl out there in Kerala who feel the same way as Major Sandeep's father did . I feel proud that at least one Malayalee got to call a politician "DOG" in public in Camera, given a chance i would have gone to a further extent. I pray to GOD that V S Achuthanandan and his likes burn in hell, As a Malayalee you let us down Prashant Nair.

VS by Bobby on 01 Dec 2008

With all due respects for Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, I feel the way his father responded during the visit of the Chief Minister of Kerala, at his house, was unwarranted. The response of the Chief Minister to the incident is another attempt by the news channel for sensitive news. Please note that the CM himself was imprisoned during Freedom Struggle period and has gone under-ground in his struggled political career. Highlighting and celebrating the incident in pblic doesnot befit any civilised society

VS by souharda on 01 Dec 2008

One of our Mallu friend mentioned as VS level to Mr.Modi. Don't compare with Mr.Modi. If you support minority then you are SECULAR, if you are support human being then you are communal, this is not correct.

VS by ms on 01 Dec 2008

how can you compare VS with such a person who has no love to humanity but utter blindness same as hitler VS love humanity and having principles through out his life

@Mr Aniyan by Prasanth Nair on 01 Dec 2008

.@Mr Aniyan ..The behaviour of Mr.UnniKrishnana was not right. After all VS is our CM ..He is representing all of us .. A lot of media showed this topics , and they are trying to tared Mr VS and extending his level to MR Modi .

Unnikrishnan by PGPanikkar on 02 Dec 2008

The government of Kerala not only failed to recognize the contribution of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan but also failed to express the feelings of the people of Kerala .The government and its ministers did not act in time at all.As a damage controlling measure the CM and his home minister went to meet them after cremation of the slain Major is over.Achudanandan has not taken any appointment with Mr Unnikrishnan . How can the CM enter to some body`s house with out any permission of the host? The whole incident was handled by the Kerala government and its chief minister in the most unprofessional and unethical way .Achudanandan and KodiyeriBalakrishnan should resign and they are misfit for the position they occupy.Even a toddy tapper of Kerala will not use such indecent words as done by the Hon: Kerala CM. Mr Unniksishnan is a retired Director of ISRO. Will not a dog enter his house on his bereavements? The CM has lost his balance. He is not sitting in a tailor `s shop, but he is sitting is a constitutional position.

Shame for all Keralites by Annyan on 02 Dec 2008

Mr Prashant you wont tell such a comment if it was your son who died in the battle with terrorists. CM actually represented political parties attitude towards the people (living and dead)

Kerala CM snubbed by Krishna Nair on 02 Dec 2008

Dear Mr Prashant nair, VS May be the CM but was he asleep that he took 3 long days to find the brave martyrs home ???And finally when he showed up it was with his gang of cameramen and newspeople? What does he wan to prove if u say that the distraught father behaved was not in a proper way then wat can you say abt comments by VS that if not for unnikrishnan ot even a dog would have come to that house .. that was an admirable piece wasnt it ??perfect cultered language coming form our hounourable CM ...? right prashant ??

Mr. PRASANTH NAIR by N.V.SANKARAN on 01 Dec 2008

Mr. Prasath, Mr. Modi had the decency to gracefully accept the rejection By Mrs. Karkare. But, our comrades no shame. Mr. Unnikrishnan had very clearly showed his objection to the visits of the dignitaries from Kerala government. But, VS sneaked into the house through the back door while Kodiyeri engaged Mr. Unnikrishnan outside, if reports are to be believed. I agree with you on one count. You cannot compare VS or Kodiyeri to Modi.

Stand for the Nation ! by Benin on 01 Dec 2008

Politicians are from our soceity by dotcompals on 01 Dec 2008

Politicians are also from within our society itself. They will be having the same quality as you and me. If you people are so critical about the politicians of our time, why dont you people come to politics and do the best things. No use, just giving bad words to Politicians. Try to improve the system by participating, dont hide behind and be a mere critic. All said and done Mr.Unnikrishnanan behavior was not right.

slain major's father snubs kerala cm by mohan on 01 Dec 2008

i know you are a true blooded sakhavau who swallows anything that octagenarian befuddled relic of a Cm throws at you. 'all said and done Mr unnikrishnan's father's behavior was not right" realy, sorry, come again. painful isn;t it when your doddering fossil gets a taste of his own medicine. remember the way this relic snubbed jagadhi after having invited him for a function to inaugurate the wearing of khadi in schools? was he right to do that? once in a while it is good that this fossil gets as good as he has given

India Needs A Leader Like This ! by PGPanikkar on 02 Dec 2008

The Kerala CM did not take any appointment to visit MrKUnnikrishnan and his family. How could he enter there with out the permission of the host? The whole episode is handled in a shabby way by the government of Kerala.Achu should resign as he is misfit.

Achuthananthan represents his party by Rathi on 01 Dec 2008

hi dotcompals, Afterall Achuthananthan represents his party, not all keralites in true sense! will achuthananthan support you if offered your candidature? my friend, please understand, you have to throw stones, make country bombs, slap on the face of your teacher, burn answer sheets, burn transport buses, stab at least two political rivals.. etc for you to contest. You still have doubts? Speak to Acuthananthan or Balakrishnan, they will explain it further! My friend don't spoil the nation by supporting criminals - Be proud of an Indian and together we build a Nation.

whom v blame, minister or his personal secretary? by MITHUN SUKUMARAN on 01 Dec 2008

dearf riends, i dont understand one thing is? any soldier who got shot after having any kind of accident or war he or she will be given guard of honour. how come such a big incident happend and the major minister have mised that. its so shameful that a chief minister being got away from this ceremony. chief minister is a person who is the representtive of the whole billion people, and the people trust that person a lot. he or she cud not have mised such a painful but major ceremony happend in the premises of kerala or anywere... if the minister didnt happen to know, then change the personal who was incharge to inform the minister at right time. please do right desicions at right time. this is wat v lack in india. if this was a mistake of the secretariat, then personal involved should be charged, give him atlseat a de promotion, that we will b aware of our duties all ahead......

Illiterate Kerala Ministers ! by Benin on 01 Dec 2008

Naturally, the staff will be fired at the end! So far many of them including IAS/IPS had taken burden for these illiterate ministers for their lack of experience or management skills. Seems no one dare to speak out this publicly. At this context we salute Major Sandeep's respected dad for what he did!

THIS IS UNFAIR by James on 01 Dec 2008

Prashant Nair, you looked hurt when Mr. Unnikrishnan threw the keral cm out of his house! Look, he deserved that ! People should express out what they feel: I heard recently that Achuthanathan is also the I T Minister of Kerala who doesn't know the spelling of the word 'EMAIL' Oh..what a minister!

THIS IS UNFAIR by Manoj on 01 Dec 2008

I support Prashant. Though you can call me anti-communist, I support Kerala CM on this. I have seen how Mr Unnikrishnan behaved on TV. He may be under emotions or whatever, this is not the Hindu culture to behave to a guest, esp. those coming to show condolenses. Infact, it was Kerala CM, not Achuthanandan that visited his house. If Unnikrishnan is under such behavior his relatives should have restrained him. Mr unnikrishnan and his relatives brought shame to the slain martyr.

Beat Him by annyan on 02 Dec 2008

Mr Manoj you are not anti communist, you are shame to the entire nation

Slain Major's father snubs Kerala CM by Ajith on 01 Dec 2008

I appreciate both Mrs Karkare rejecting the monetary awards as well as the Unnikrishnan not meeting Mr Achuthanandan or Mr Balakrishnan. It shows that we Indians have had enough of all the politicians. My only fear is that with elections in the corner, this event (the Mumbai tragedy) will be soon forgotten. In this context , i would request all Indians to exercise their franchise properly so that the next lot of politicians should not take Indians for granted and such incidents should not be repeated.

Culture by Cultured Indian on 01 Dec 2008

I am not surprised by the behaviour of the father of the deceased.Quet understandable, though not correct.Wht is surprising is the endorsement it is receiving from the public of the country which poses itself as highly cultured.Shame.

What culture by Vivek on 01 Dec 2008

I would like our "Cultered Indian" to elaborate. What culture is he talking about- that we should fall at politicians feet whenever they show up? This man demonstrated that he has back-bone just as his son did. He was honouring his son's sacrifice, period. On the other hand, it is evident from your post that you have no spine. One the one hand you show understanding, on the other you say it is not correct. You are part of the "I-am-right-but-sir-you-are-also-right-brigade"; totally lacking in conviction, unwilling to take a concreate stand on any issue.

Cut the Crap by Impassioned Indian on 01 Dec 2008

If the public is forgetting its 'culture', could it be that the politicians desensitised the public for far too long. Perhaps the public is waking up now.

Polititians forget culture by James on 01 Dec 2008

hi, your kind words indicate support to keral cm. tell me, you stand up your nation or for this rougue who speaks politics through out?
