"Cricket Australia's (CA) position is that the ICC code of conduct already covers this issue," a CA spokesman was quoted as saying in The Herald Sun.
"A total ban on sledging had not been supported," he added.
The CA official argued that even if a total ban is imposed, conflicts related to verbal abuse would be decided only on the basis of the existing code and therefore it was not necessary to completely do away with on-field banter.
"The code makes it an offence to use language which is obscene, offensive or insulting. It is also an offence to make an obscene gesture," he said.
"The code, under level 2 offence details, also notes that the ICC acknowledges that there will be verbal exchanges between players during the course of play," he said.
"Instead of seeking to eliminate these entirely, umpires will look to lay charges when these exchanges fall below an acceptable standard," he added.
The BCCI has been pushing for a complete ban on sledging after the acrimonious tour of Australia, which was marred by a racism row that threatened to divide the cricket world.

Who would make the judgement that sledging crossed the limit , the same cro oks , proctor, bucknor
Looks lik Sreesanth will have to stop playing cricket if the ban sledging.
Bring in laws of Wimbledon tennis tournaments. Forget about sledging, the opposing players are banned from even talking to each other while playing on the court.
Very surprising to note that Cricket Australia, which portrays its players as victims of of racial abuse, refuses to support a ban on the same issue. In fact they should be the ones to propose this ban. This shows who is the offender and who is the vivtim and it clearly exposes Cricketers of Australia as the real culprits. The truth is that whenever Australia cannot compete with tough opponents they resort to such cheap means and with ICC in their pockets they can manipulate the rules as well as get others punished for things started by Australian players.
A total ban on sledging should be most welcome to any sana and sober person.
