Self denigration & flagellant approach by foreign directors of Indian conditions has recently received wide acclaim & euphoria amidst media & so called art critics & activists.
One wonders whether the film has any relieving feature or even remotely induces the rich & the affluent to mitigate the rigours of slum problems.
Mr. Amitabh Bachchan deserves full support & compliments for speaking out against such depiction of poverty squalor & dirt without any relieving feature. Years back Mrs. Nargis Dutt then an M.P, vouched similar views about famous trilogy of Satyajit Ray & rightly .
Such films should at least convey some message, some motivation to the public and more so the elite to come forward & improve their lot. Instead, the film makers, actors, theaters make crores on depiction of such gruesome sites, at times nauseating but totally meaningless.
One hopes, pseudo art critics, media & the elite do not acclaim such films but take example from films like "Tare jamin par" which are elevating, and motivating films.

Director Boyle has done a fantastic work with Slumdog millionaire. He deserves all support for the theme that sympathizes with the poor, the inhabitants of the slums. Our rich has no sympathy or feeling for the poor , otherwise there would have been no slums in India. Those who are critical to Boyle"s film do it just because of jealousy or false patriotism. We know that many Indian cities are dirty and poverty affects the majority of Indians. Those who do not see the sufferance of the poor , the heartless ones would criticize the film under the pretext of egoism and false patriotism and that is probably, at least in some cases, with an intention to split the society and create some violence against the film. But such a perverse attitude can not succeed because the majority of the Indians know the truth, know that India is poor, know that India has slums. If we are genuine let us learn first to admit the truth and then work for uplifting the poor. There is no need for any false talks.
People: As an PIO living in US; let me tell you. India's image gets pinned down by riots; mumbai bombing; info tech success and stayam scandal. Slumdog is movie about love; betrayal and luck in very tough conditions. That's how they are seeing it here. No one is thinking everyone in India lives in Dharvi. So get hold of youself and fix something if you really care about the image.
I think Bala is right on the money - Freedom of Expression. Also it is not like folks like Amitabh Bachcan and Mahesh Bhatt have not depicted parts on India in unfavorable ways. Personally I think Amitabh Bachchan is one of the most overrated artists of all time. The guy has a say on everything and all he has got to back his mouth is the many Bollywood potboilers that he has acted in (which have absolutely no semblance or relevance in the current day). I think it is plain jealousy when something intelligent comes along and they are not a part of it.
Sulmdog Millionaire is yet another attempt to sell India as a country of ragpickers. R. K. Narayan sold his description of Indian Life for a few dollors in a similar way. Satyajit Ray become world popular by depicting Indian misery. However Indians need to keep their mouths shut as it is the freedom of expression in question, Bala
Just a neutral opinion.May we all admit to reality. It is embarassing, I suppose when one walks out of the 'Lands End Hotel' for example, after living in luxury and then see poverty. Instead of pretending it is not there, let us develop a constructive solution. 'Slumdog Millionaire' is a most unsuitable name though it creates curiosity. I will be coming to India to investigate how to establish Education for children and whoever needs it. I would request your cooperation. Thank you.
The reality is we failed as a nation, as a republic in providing a good scoiety and upliftment to people. We are scared to accept it. We only compare ourselves with countries like Pakistan and Burma, to make ourselves look good, The truth is our country is a "functioning anarchy".
people can never accept good movies i guess... try to see the positive aspect of this.... don keep blaming....
