Slumdog millionaire

New Delhi Upbeat over the multiple Oscar feat of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, Home Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday said that it won't be "very long" for a movie made by an Indian to get global cinema's highest recognition.

Chidambaram, who was eloquent about India's "soft power", said the country of a billion people "adopted" Briton Danny Boyle's film as its own though it "may not be an Indian film".

Monday was a "red letter" day in the history of the country when ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ won as many as eight Oscars with A R Rahman picking up two of them, he said.

"'Slumdog Millionaire' may not be an Indian film. But a nation of billion people adopted it as an Indian film.

"How long it will take for an Indian film produced by an Indian and directed by an Indian director to bag the Oscar? It will not be very long," he said during the presentation ceremony of the National Tourism Awards in New Delhi.

Warning against underestimating India's soft power, Chidambaram said India has a wide varieties to showcase its soft power which includes art, music, film and Bollywood among others.

Truth beyond veils. by Hassan on 26 Feb 2009

The poverty in our country is a reality and it can be seen anybody visits India.Slums also part of the reality and there is nothing wrong if the world acknowledges our success beyond the poverty. We are a developing nation but the achievements our countrymen get around the world are tremendous!.At last it is the movie which opened the eyes of many to the slumdwellers...

priorities by kaylee on 25 Feb 2009

Individual indian talent was appreciated and brought to the fore. Lets hope the slum kids get some life altering changes from this. It also showcases the point that there is so much freedom in our country that such a movie could be made here and the peace on our strrets that allowed shootings.{no gunfights or driveby shootings} Other than these which are phenomenal ,we really do not have anything else to be proud of.Why do we still have such slums even 60 years after independence where westerners can come and have their fill of pathos.

Slum Dog by Hemant on 25 Feb 2009

Only credit congress can take is keeping people in slums so that this movie got a subject. In West any depiction of poverty from east is welcome. It makes west feel good. They can see how fortunate they are and people of England can see what with India for 200 years.

what a pity by shyam kishore on 25 Feb 2009

This is crazy ..Just because we got 3 or 4 Oscar on whatever grounds .this cannot be showcased as countries capability . Please come out frome the imperial slavery mindset .Oscar is no measure for the best of anything in the movie . Oscar is given as per the the likes of an all american jury not by an international jury . Respected Minister .lets talk something serious for a change

What a pity is what? by Suman on 25 Feb 2009

What imperialist mindset are you talking about?. The Congress party's achievement is the slums is the fact- if they want to take credit i mean. It is only you who are in the imperialist mind set still, you live in the past, this is 2008.They showed the truth, 80 percent of India lives in poverty, as much as i hate what the British did to India, i am happy that the film highlights the slums. This is the real India, India is not developed, do we have basic things like power, water, sewage systems for everybody?- no. Come to reality Sir. Instead of such bravado denial let us truly work to develop India and make India a developed country.

Slumdog an example of UPA! by rakesh m on 25 Feb 2009

You shameless congressiwala, how dare you claim the credit of a film made by the westerners exposing India's slum areas and its pathetic living conditions of thousands of people! Is this an achievement of UPA/congress? All the congress leaders are claiming that Oscar award is an achievement of congress/UPA govt. shame on you chamchas of the Italian waitress!

Make it tax-free by Sanjoy Gupta on 25 Feb 2009
