Veteran director Ketan Mehta, who is spearheading the Independent Indian Filmmakers Worldwide (IIFW) initiative, is in Cannes to promote his latest film Rang Rasiya--a period drama about the relationship between legendary painter Raja Ravi Varma and his muse starring Randeep Hooda and Nandana Sen.
"There will be no market screening of Rang Rasiya," says Mehta, "but I will unveil clips from the film at a special event on May 20."
Members of the cast will be in attendance during the promotional bash. Rang Rasiya, which also has an English version titled Colours of Passion, is set for release across India by end-June.
"We will release only the Hindi version to begin with," says the director. The global release of the English version will be done a little while later."
Thanks to the sheer size and scope of their unfolding commercial plans, major media groups like Reliance Big Entertainment, Eros International and Sahara One Media and Entertainment are all likely to be the centre of attention.
But for small, independent films, Cannes is the gateway to a world of opportunities. Nobody knows that better than Jagmohan Mundhra, a Cannes Film Market regular, who is back on the Croisette this year with Shoot on Sight, a film starring Naseeruddin Shah as a real-life Muslim Scotland yard officer
"We've already had a market screening of the film and the response has been encouraging," says Mundhra.
Mundhra, whose last film 'Provoked' starring Aishwarya Rai began its journey with a well-publicised premiere in the film market in Cannes, is hoping for a repeat show with Shoot on Sight.
Mumbai-based Vivek Singhania, the producer of Karma Crime, Passion, Reincarnation has landed in Cannes along with the film's director, M Shahjehan.
Shahjehan has spent a large part of his career as assistant director on international movies shot in India, including Richard Attenboroughs multiple Oscar-winning Gandhi.
Karma is being screened in the Cannes Film Market to prospective global buyers. "I make mainstream movies," says Singhania, whose production credits include titles like Naa Tum Jaano Na Hum and Chura Liye Hai Tumne.
"But this is a calculated risk. If Karma clicks, I will keep the experiment going," he said. Karma is a film shot entirely in India with an international cast and crew, with a Polish-German actress and model Claudia Ciesla playing a key onscreen role.
She is expected to land in Cannes in time for the market screenings of the film.

Small Big Time director from india too having balls at cannes. Our Vasanth Rokade and Dr.Ramesh Bhange are already creating ripples and now actress Miss Medha Rokade also joins them at cannes.miss Medha missed direct Pune-Munich flights to gpot delayed. Thanks to PMC traffic chaos!Famous OSCAR winner director Vasanth Rokade (Satara) has launched a brand new documentary titled DEVAADASI.IT IS Hair RASING STORY OF MIDDLE AGED WOMAN PLAYED BY MEDHA ROKADE WHO was kidnapped and kept in confinement. Abused every possible way by land mafia Vasanth Rokade and his goons led by naredra rokade.Miss Rucha was born and as per family/tribal tradition in Rokade family, she was to be deflowered by an elderly male of the same family. There will be voting and one who gets highest vote will deflower this innocent girl and then she will be forced to serve other male members of tribe as medha Rokade did for 20 years of so.Ms medha here plays role of life time where she openly defies Vasanth Rokade, ashok Rokade--faces wrath of all members of this ugly tribes but eventually she was burnt alive by kshirsgara tribes and bhange tribes. Destiny had more blood in the mid and there was a tie for deflowering rights. Real story start there and fight to finish as per tribes rule between two contenders is filmed at a high riser on Sun Empire on broad daylight. Blood stained skyline of Pune shown in the background is visual reminder of these ghostly traditions --but at the climax Miss RUCH Rokade commits suicide to save her pride rather than getting deflowered by a bhange man!!
Photography by UK Return NHS doctor ashok Rokade is hair rising and barring few explicit night scenes between tribal leader and Miss Medha, it is top niche. Fight to Finish just before midbreak is world class where ramesh Bhnage and Lalit kshirsagara (two protagonists) fight to kill for deflowering rights and execution of Lalit reminds viewer way abhimanyu was killed. Director Vasanth has used Geetha Slokas in the background just to tone down violence shown of the screen and will be one of the highlights of this splendid movie. Right angles and HD Lenses used by ashok Rokade will put him in the top bracket in the Hollywood as well. Vasanth Da proves beyond doubt here that even Mahabharata was fought for Drawpadi’s lust and s@@xually charged male/female can be worst than Doryadhana. Decapitation (al- Rokade style) shown on the screen of Lalit is gruesome scene and villain ramesh bhange jumps from 6th floor tower is a real stunt. Dramatic transformation of Lalit Kshirsagar from a civilian air India employee to a blood sucking s@@x charged tribal monster is worth a watch. Ramesh Lallu Bhnage who normally plays light hearted comedy role is seen here as tribal gangster with evil tint and seems he has worked hard on his physique and voice modulations. Dance number by Miss Medha Rokade where she goes almost topless to plead /please tribal leaders that still she is young, beautiful and capable to serve tribes as Devadasi for many more years and thereby telling them to spare Her Daughter. But Tribal leaders eventually burn her alive so that as per tribe rules, new Devadasi has to be nominated! Miss Medha looks stunning, divine and erotic and would draw big crowd for sure. Her Dance numbers reminds mennakumari of pakizaa
Back ground scores by Kirti Rokade is pleasant with right mix of vocal and instrumentals.Villain Naredra Rokade as Lions Club officer running flesh trading business in rural interior Maharashtra is worth mentioning. KVPatil as Public Prosecutor and Miss Jadhav PSI for Corrupt investigations Officer of bride burning CASE reflects how closely Police, Judiciary and Politics are interlinked.Director and producer VASANTH ROKADE Leading lady, Miss Medha Rokade and Rucha ROKADE CHILD STAR-- YASHVANT BHNAGI AND ADITYA as a perverted retarded boy are ok. In nut shell excellent movie by Vasanth Rokade and NCW (national commission of women) has promised to dub the movie in other Indian languages as well. Vasanth Da raise a valid point here that only 50 sati case has been registered since independence and we have Sati Laws but we have no laws preventing Devadasi and problem here is lot wider than isolated sati cases.Really Vasanth Rokade is a pride of this tiny city of Satara!
