On Saturday, the DS Constructions announced that if the daily commuters wished to shift from paying cash and monthly concession pass to “Smart Express” — the new name for the concession scheme — before February 25, the one-time refundable deposit of Rs 500 will be waived. People who have already bought smart tags can approach the designated counter at the KM 24 toll plaza to get the deposited amount transferred back to their accounts.
People registering before February 25 are also to get a 50 per cent discount valid for 30 days from the time of registration, but for two trips per day only.
Manhad Narula, director, DS Constructions, said: “Once most users shift to smart tags, it will enable a stop-free movement for them, reduce the waiting time for the commuters paying cash.”
Commuters also have the option of shifting from SmartExpress to FlexiSmart — a scheme intended for those who don’t use the expressway daily. The card will be valid for a year but offers no discount.
Though company officials are confident that traffic movement will be smooth and they won’t need to open tollgates, it is likely that if the waiting time exceeds 10 minutes vehicles will be permitted to pass through without paying toll.
