New Delhi Voicing her concern on women's security in the capital, popular television actress and BJP leader Smriti Irani said on Saturday that rapist should be awarded capital punishment for their crime.

"A rapist should get capital punishment for this gruesome crime, especially if the woman is killed afterwards," said the actress, who also alleged that Delhi has now become the crime capital of the country.

Irani, who was in New Delhi to campaign for party candidate Vijay Goel who is contesting from New Delhi Lok Sabha constituency, noted that efforts should be made to make laws that instil fear in the mind of criminals who seek to demean women.

"We need stronger laws, many crimes against women go unregistered. Justice must be seen to have been done and a fear must creep in the mind of criminals who seek to demean women," said Irani, who shot to fame with her strong character in the well known serial 'Kyun Ki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi'.

Charging the Congress with failing to protect women in the capital, Vijay Goel unveiled his agenda for women's security, including an all-women private security force for educational institutions, toilet facilities for women and proper street lighting.

Irani, when asked if television soap operas were responsible for stereotyping women and leading to crime, shot back, saying "a rapist is a rapist".

"A rapist is a rapist. There can be no excuse and television or entertainment cannot be blamed for that. A woman of 80 years too gets raped," she said.

When asked who would be a better prime ministerial candidate of the party, L K Advani or Narendra Modi, she replied, "BJP's prime ministerial candidate for 2009 Lok Sabha is L K Advani."

Goel, taking a dig at his rival Ajay Maken of Congress, said that he was confident as people of his constituency were aware of the development work he has done.

"My rival is scared of me. Recently he said he would take part in a debate on some TV channel against me but backed out at the last moment."

Goel said that even if the BJP becomes the opposition party, he will ensure that women's safety is given top priority.

Capital punsihment for rapists by Khan Abdul on 02 May 2009

India has become a very unsafe country for women and exemplary punishment should be meted out to any person disrespecting women in any fashion. Capital punishment for rape and dowry bride burning, is a must. Likewise, disfiguring a woman with acid should draw an automatic life term, bottom pinching and eve teasing deserve a minimum of 7-10 years in jail. If half of our population has to live in perpetual fear, strong measures are needed. Vande Mataram.

This idea has been half-heartedly thrown around like a used rug by the women's saffron brigade. First it was Sushma Swaraj that tried to pass an amendment in parliament that is an embarrassment to our constitutional history. Now Smriti Irani. Do these women not realise that if there is a death penalty for rape, there is no motivation for rapists to leave their victims alive? While the whole world is moving towards the abolition of the death penalty as an inhuman and cruel punishment, there are still barbarians in our country that would rather expand it. Why stop at rape? Why not for corruption too? It would be interesting to see how much support that amendment would get in parliament.

Rapists must be punished by Seema Zafar on 02 May 2009

It's true that violence against women has increased. Law enforcement does not respond adequately and book the culprits. There is always an attempt to sensationalize the crime, that too at the rape victims cost. This further aggravates the situation and social stigma attached to the victim does not help. A rape victim deserves dignity and justice, which is seldom the case.Advocating maximum possible punishment for this heinous crime will definitely help.

Capital punishment for rape by Ranjan on 02 May 2009

How do you hand capital punishment to rapist sons of say, retired army generals, navy admirals, political party leaders or their likes in India?Indubitably they will get scott free and only the common hooligans and thugs minus the party goondas will be hanged. It is a good idea but won't work in present day Indian society although some people may think it is better than nothing.

No point making capital punsihment common by Nimisha Arihant on 02 May 2009
