12.45 pm: Rama, 62, a resident of Sector 23-D was soaking in the sun, lying down in the verandah of her house, when a youngster barged in and snatched her gold chain. He was wearing a yellow sweater, a pair of blue jeans and white sports shoes. Rama cried for help, but the accused sped away in their black motorbike. Another young man was waiting for him outside.
1.15 pm: Harjit Kaur, a resident of Sector 15-D, was on her way home from market when two youngsters riding a two-wheeler, both wearing helmets, attacked her. The pillion rider snatched her gold chain and fled. The area is one of the busiest marketplaces in the city and was crowded when the incident took place.
1.45 pm: Sudarshan Kumari, a Sector 10, Panchkula, resident who works in the UT Census department, was standing on the side of a road near her office at AP roundabout when two youngsters, riding a black Pulsar motorbike, attacked her. The pillion rider snatched her gold chain and sped away. She couldn’t see the rider, the pillion rider was a youngster with dark complexion and sported long hair.
It was again a field day for snatchers on prowl in the city on Wednesday, and all four incidents took place in broad daylight. None of the culprits could be caught despite dozens of check posts in place.
As many as 11 incidents of snatchings have taken place in the last 48 hours, all in the marketplaces and inner roads of sectors.
The police were left with egg on its face as while on one hand they failed to arrest anybody in this regard on the other hand one of its men deployed at an anti-snatching naka was caught accepting bribe. (See box)
A senior officer said: “We are going to intensify our patrolling in the coming days. The snatchers are definitely going to be rounded up. They can’t get away by creating such a disruption and disturbance on city roads. We are in process of developing certain vital clues, which would definitely bring results.”
Cop caught taking bribe
Constable Surinder Kumar, who was deployed at a check post in Sector 32, was caught red-handed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) while accepting a bribe of Rs 3,000. Officers said the Sector 34 police had registered a case on January 11 against a Sector 22-B resident Sonia Mattu on charges of letting slum dwellers raise shacks in Colony No. 5. As the accused is not legally entitled to obtain the copy of the FIR from the police station, she contacted Surinder and asked him to provide her the document, for which he had demanded Rs 3,000. CBI officers accompanied the complainant to the check post and arrested Surinder. They also recovered marked currency notes from his possession. As Surinder tried to escape, he was beaten up in public by the CBI sleuths. A case was registered against him under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
