New Delhi, January 22: Australia suggested that some Indians were using the education route to migrate to that country and described this trend as a matter of concern.

Australian High Commissioner John McCarthy noted that there was ‘too much linkage’ between Indian students going to educational institutions in that country with a view to subsequently emigrate.

He prefaced his remarks by saying that education has become a new element of cooperation between Australia and India and it has become the second biggest destination for Indian students who aspire to study abroad after the US.

"I have two-three concerns. The plus is Indian students are going to Australia. The concern is all are not going to the best institutions of learning. Australia would like to see more going to the best institutions," he said.

Another concern, he pointed out, was that there was ‘too much linkage’ between Indians going to Australian educational institutions with a view to subsequently emigrate.

McCarthy was delivering a lecture on Australia's New Government and Asia at the Observer Research Foundation.

He said the Australian Government attaches a huge amount of significance to its relationship with India and noted that Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is planning to visit India at an early stage.

Just want to say that anyone thinking of migrating to Australia should not take this article or comments seriously. Most of the guys commenting here are those who are not living in Australia or probably have never put their foot here. I am an IT professional from India working in Sydney for one of the top Telecommunication Company. I immigrated to Australia a year ago and within 2 weeks of landing I got this excellent job opportunity. Nobody made a fuss about my nationality, origin or accent. Salary wise also I am in the higher bracket and making much more than an average “white” Australian. Mind you that I am not the only Indian who is doing well. So in short, Australia is great country to immigrate provided you come here with proper plan and you are willing to respect people with different cultural background and respect Australian values. Some people may have wrong assumptions about Australian Values so here is the link to clear your doubts http://valuesaustralia.com/australian_values.htm

Australia is mine says Ambassador by drmadhani on 23 Jan 2008

Austros MUST shed its wind hallucinations that they are superior race. Aryans are Superior race. Austros must never allow any Hindusthani to put their foot in Australia. They will not have to worry about students migrating to Australia.Australia is and was immigrant of discards of UK US EU. Atleast highly educated Hindus are migrating- dumb idiotic racists should be educated enough to know this, but than again this is 'ambassador' of Austros talking!

Places of Fraud!!! by Ganesh on 23 Jan 2008

Bal Thackray is demanding Work Permit for Non- Marathis to work in Maharashtra. He goes a step ahead, Bal Thackray says Hindu Malays should live as a third grade minority citizen in Malasiya. Marathis are making movies like "Aamchich Mumbai" which promotes violence against Non-Marathis in Mumbai. If an Indian can not work freely in his own country...Australia is far away. Fact is that Rascals all around the world irrespective of their religion or region speak the same language. Unfortunately I can only speak for myself and as a Bihari and Indian I will never visit to Maharashtra and Austraila but I have no control over others but my advice to Biharis, please don't migrate to Maharshtra and to Indians don't migrate to Australia as these are no more safe places to work with dignity. Work for your own home state and own country and bring glory to your own place. Education? What Education....these are places of fraud! They will take your money and then say, " you are not wanted here."

White Australia by D.Bose on 23 Jan 2008

There is nothing wrong with that at all. Australians also use education to migrate to USA and UK. I know a number of Australians who are now living in USa and UK and used their education to migrate. There are millions of Chinese in Australia. All Australian universities have at least half of the student population as Chinese. There is nothing wrong with them, only Indians need to be blamed. This is typical racist Australian attitude. Australia is only for the whites and honorary whites( Chinese), not for Indian. However, Australia does not belong to the British or Irish either, it belongs to the Aborigins, who are nowhere to be found in white Australia.

Let's not jump to conclusion by Desi in Sydney on 23 Jan 2008

Australian High Commissioner’s comments are completely misinterpreted by this stupid journalist. What he really meant was that some Indians are using education system in a wrong way to immigrate. Lot of students come here to study subjects like accounting and IT but then in few days they give up and enrol in courses like cookery just to get an easy and fast permanent residency. Such students have no intention to work and contribute in their area of studies. There is a huge labour shortage in Australia and the Australian government is encouraging students to immigrate after their studies provided they work in that speciality for sometime. Unfortunately we Indians have a habit not going by the book.

AUS-IND by NB on 23 Jan 2008

Well, the Honorable dignitary does not know that he is better off having present day students as future citizens of his country. Students can contribute to the economy, culture and wealth of the country more than the refugees and other migrants and migrants based on religion. Students can also better integrate into the system and society as they would gone thru a learning path in that country. US benefited a lot from students settling there. If Australia does that, given Australia's resources, they have potential to be a super-power. Maybe, this Australian likes to see more whites in his country!Again, as some said do not mix cricket with Australia. Cricket and cricketers is not on top of the issues here, unlike in India! Maybe there is no culture in Aus, but the government is not corrupt and all of us get our work done on time and without beseeching anyone. What Indian culture are we proud of - corruption, people getting anglicized, forgetting our own languages, not studying our Ramayana, Mahabharata, puraanas, Bhagavatha, and other treasures. Making those stupid Bollywood movies, always trying to cheat or con others. We can learn a lot from a young nation as Australia. There are negatives everywhere. But, negatives in India hits you hard, stops you from growing and frustrates you. That's why students dont want to go back to India and face all that again.NB

Immigration and education by Sudakar on 23 Jan 2008

arrey wah bhai wah!, first u want our money which our students bring to your country, entice them with points for australian education in ur immigration system and then when they do apply for immigration, u complain about it.Do you just want our money for free ?

Immigration and Education by sharma on 23 Jan 2008

Why dont you ask millions of Indians who want are queuing at embassy begging for immigration. If you are so heady and strong why bother about their point system. Infact why would Indians pay so much money and what's their intention. Maybe they are going their with immigration in mind and probably they have now have enough people so they are thinking about it. They are soverign country. Lets respect that.

what the? by krish on 23 Jan 2008

Ok what else are indian students who pay lakhs of ruppes supposed to do? work in india for paltry salaries, if Australia wants money to fund their universities and at the same time has requirements for skilled people this is a good trend as long as the students complete their course. In many cases such as mine the university was totally unequipped to handle the course so what do we do ,take up another course. If australia does not encourage this route then their officers (IDP) should openly state that the government does not encourage this during their glamorous seminars.

Emigration to Australia by Ram on 23 Jan 2008

I think ppeople are mixing up things here. Australian education system is known for its high standards and dont confuse this with the behavior of its cricket team. Most cricketers dont go beyond Grade 10 including your great SRT and rarely you come across a Kumble/Srinath with high qualifications. Indians emigrate because they dont want to live with stupid reservation policies pursued by congress party. Thats the main reason. You are free to assume any thing else beyond that.

Think again my friend by Sugata Sensarma on 23 Jan 2008

My friend ...A country's education and culture is not only reflected by the grades ,school ,college and university degrees but it shows up in their citizens behaviour as well.Cricketers are no exception.Australians are mostly arrogant, snob and supremacists although in real life they are big losers. They always treat others particularly non-whites as dirts. This is ridiculous, annoying and unacceptable. Thanks for your comment. Sugata

Education for Migration?? by A Thomas on 23 Jan 2008

This guy is a coook who has no concept of Globalization akin to some of our homegrown types. Indians have many options for education. Australia is not exactly known for its educational system. It is better known as Her Majesty's dumping ground. Regardless, the moron is entitled to his opinion

Some Indians use education to migrate, suggests Australia by Bhaskar on 22 Jan 2008

Can anyone understand what is wrong in immigrating if they are able to contribute to the economy and be good abd responsible citizens? Will any country allow immigration if it is disadvantage to their economy or country? It important to have a proper policy and implement it. No one is forcing the universities or educational institutions to accept low achieving students? Each student contibutes $50000 if not more in two years of their stay. Don't they have right to get some overseas experience? This is a never ending debate.
