Pune, August 29 A man tried to commit suicide on a college campus in the city on Friday after his son was denied admission. The bizarre incident happened at Marathwada Mitramandal College of Commerce at Deccan.

Babu Saudagar, who had gone to the college seeking admission for his son, is a watchman working with the Marathwada Mitramandal Junior High School at Kalewadi.

“His son Musali (18) had initially tried for a engineering seat under the MH-CET, but his domicile certificate wasn't approved. He then decided to try for a B Com seat at this college. His father approached the treasurer of the college, Bhausaheb Govindrao Jadhav, urging him to do something about it,” police inspector Jaywant Deshmukh said.

“Babu, accompanied by a friend, his wife, son and two daughters, Taslim and Naseem, met the treasurer in his office.

Jadhav told him that it wasn’t in his hands to do anything about it, Babu’s family assaulted Jadhav and broke his spectacles.

Babu, meanwhile, suddenly picked up a bottle of pesticide, drank its contents and collapsed right here,” a college spokeperson said.

He was rushed to the Prayag Hospital where he was put on life support. The police recovered the bottle used and arrested the rest of the family.

No member of the family would speak on the incident.

School secretary S.D.Ganage was livid. “The assault on the treasurer cannot be tolerated and we have lodged a complaint at the Deccan police station. They are investigating the issue.”

College principal M D Lawrence said, “On behalf of all the institutes under the Marathwada Mitramandal Society we strongly condemn the act of violence against the treasurer. We will ensure that the entire issue is sorted out and the guilty is punished.”
