Chandigarh, February 11 In a shocking instance of a witness turning hostile, a son retracted from his statements given to the police to let off the murder-accused of his father. Sham had alleged that he’d seen the two accused beat up his father when he returned from work, on March 31, 2007. The retractment is said to help the accused get away wih the crime.

Parmod and Rai Singh, residents of Mauli Jagran, were accused of murdering Gopali at his residence. Sham had stated earlier that the accused hit his father with an iron rod on the head. He had also stated that his father had refused to be taken to the hospital. In the morning he was found lying dead.

However, deviating from his statements in court, Sham stated that he doesn’t identify the accused and had no idea about the entire incident. Taking a complete U-turn, Sham went ahead saying Gopali had got into an altercation with someone and had returned home with injuries. The court acquitted the accused of the charges, owing to the statement of the complainant.

Notices on plea seeking removal of liquor vend

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued notices to the Punjab government on a letter written and signed by residents of Mansa. The letter has been converted into a Public Interest Litigation (PIL).

The residents demanded the removal of a liquor shop (vend) from joint ward number 8, 10 and 12, at Guru Teg Bahadur Marg near Ravi Dass Dharamshalla, Lalluana road, Mansa.

The petitioners pointed out that the liquor shop was being run in violation of government instructions. It was stated that a Government Primary School, Aulakh Basti, Mansa, was located barely hundred feet away from the vend. Moreover, it was stated that the Excise and Taxation department is favouring the liquor contractor and not presenting the true picture. The High Court has issued notices to the Punjab government to file a reply.
