The younger Chhibber, accompanied by his father, appeared before Grewal at about 11.30 am, in connection with the inquiry ordered by Chief Justice V K Jain in an ongoing Public Interest Litigation filed in the court.
Though Chhibber could not give any satisfactory replies to the Deputy Commissioner, Grewal, while talking to Newsline said, “Though I had summoned only Sonam Chhibber, his father too accompanied him. They came to me at about 11.30 am, but I had to attend a meeting with the Chief Secretary at 12.15 pm on some other issue, because of which, I could not examine Sonam thoroughly. They have submitted certain documents to me, explaining their position. I did not get time to examine their reply. I will see and if the need arises, I shall call him up again.”
It may be recalled that in the said PIL, petitioners have alleged that one Sonam Kumar, son of Krishan Nath, resident of 178 Sant Lal Road Ferozepur Cantt, had grabbed 48 kanals of the said land. Initially, the petitioners were not aware of the identity of the said Sonam Kumar. However, in an affidavit filed by the Deputy Commissioner, Mohali, the identity of the said Sonam Kumar was revealed as Sonam Chhibber, son of Lt Gen B K N Chhibber, former Governor of Punjab.
Taking a serious note of this fact, the court, vide orders dated December 10, 2007, had issued directions to the state government to reply by the next date of hearing, which is February 4, 2008, as to “the action that has been taken against a person who has filed an affidavit with pseudonym name, either for the purpose of registration of the sale deed or any other purpose.”
