Muzaffarpur, March 27: A Muzaffarpur court has admitted a complaint against Congress president Sonia Gandhi charging her with outraging religious feelings of the Hindus in her portrayal as Goddess Durga in a poster at the party's Muradabad office in Uttar Pradesh.

District Judge H K Srivastava admitted the complaint filed by an advocate Sudhir Ojha against Gandhi, Uttar Pradesh and Muradabad district party presidents.

The charges were made under three Sections of IPC: Sections 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class), 295 (a) (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefes) and 120(b) (criminal conspiracy).

After admitting the petition on Wednesday, Srivastava transferred it to fast-track Judge V K Mandal for initiating legal proceedings.

Earlier on December 1, 2007, a magistrate had dismissed Ojha's petition that prompted the lawyer to move the court of the district judge on December 11, 2007.

Ojha, in his complaint, alleged the Muradabad district congress president in league with UP Congress committee chief had put up the poster on the wall of the party's Muradabad office on June 21, 2007. Gandhi was in criminal conspiracy with them in the exercise, he charged.

The poster with Gandhi as 'Durga' was beamed by television channels and its photographs appeared in several newspapers hurting the sentiments of the Hindus, he alleged.

The fast track court is likely to take up hearing of the case next month.

sonia by viswanathan on 28 Mar 2008

I am reminded of Mccaulays statement to the British paliament in 1835. he had travelled the length and breadth of the country India and found it too rich and culturally advanced to be subjugated. His plan was to demolish them culturally to win over them. The britishers failed after two hundred years .. and ran away but the trials continue... with the likes of sonia , rahul .. Infact Sonia is half a Maya.. a temptress who misleeds everyone.. and Durga is MAYA , who attacks us with temptations and destroys the tempted. .. well there is always an opportunity to learn more about hinduism.. it is not a 2000 year young faith..

Sonia Ji Misunderstood by Sonia Parekh on 28 Mar 2008

I think Sonia Ji is being misunderstood. She just wants poor Hindus to develop more modern understanding of God and also assimilate better into the civilized world order. Long live Sonia Ji.

Taking God's Name in Vain by Khandu Patel on 28 Mar 2008

Sonia Gandhi was cashing in on Indira Gandhi's fame as the Goddess Durga when she took Pakistan to war. The difference is that such a claim to being Goddess by Sonia Gandhi sits uneasily with her Christian beliefs. The sensible thing should surely be made to have closure on the claim of any living person to be a God (except the Dalai Lama). The assumption of the mantle of Gods has been common fare in Hindu politics beginning with Mohandas Gandhi. It has been an easy means by which our politicians become the power brokers in India despite their lack of qualifications.Other than that good government is purely a human undertaking. Her tactics is more telling of our failure when she is heir to Rome's great past and example which speaks for greatness in the real sense of the word. The court has every right to bring her to book.
