New Delhi Sonia Gandhi today became the Congress president for the record fourth consecutive term with a message to party colleagues that they should not forget the "big responsibility" of working for all sections of society irrespective of whether the party is in power or not.

63-year-old Gandhi was declared re-elected unopposed at a ceremony which was attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and host of other senior party leaders.

Thanking the party leaders and workers for bestowing the responsibility on her yet again, she reminded them in a brief address that Congress always stood for all sections of the society and this should not be forgotten.

"Since the beginning, Congress has been working for every section of the society. Whether we are in government or not, we should not forget this big responsibility," she said.

Gandhi, whose crowning glory came in 2004 when the party formed government wresting power from NDA, expressed confidence that her party cadres would always keep the flag of the Congress flying high.

Perpetuation of Nehru-Gandhi dynasty is a curse to India!!! by A K SAXENA on 06 Sep 2010

In a national party like the Congress where there is no inner party democracy, the re-election of Sonia Gandhi as its President is hardly the news. The election was a charade. This gives me the feeling of deja vu.Madam Indira Gandhi was the only male in the Congress party! The position is worse now.All except her are less than females with no voice.Dr Manmohan Singh is the de jure Prime Minister,Sonia as the de facto PM,is ruling the roost. All decisions are taken by her as the back-seat driver with no accountability. This ad hoc arrangement suits Dr Manmohan Singh who is in poor health. He governs through GOMs and his Economic Advisory Council. Why can't Sonia Gandhi take over as the de jure PM so that she could be held accountable for all her actions. Is she scared? What is the use of being the Chairperson of such a mammoth body called the NAC at the cost of public exchequer. Is it only to let her enjoy all governmental perks like the PM? Too early to say by joshi on 05 Sep 2010

It is the Nehru family and probably the international element that holds on the Cong despite its sycophancy culture? Did the same Cong take YSR death-conspiracy allegation impartially to its logical end? Why tolerating sycophants of meanest level like V Hanumantharao, G Venkatasamy his son in law - Sankar Rao, Yashki Goud - the fraudster and that whole gang which has done nothing for the people of A.P. Why at all listening to these kinds of purely selfish elements and harassing YSJ who has already proved to be a crowd-puller and a person who moves with the masses as well? Are the people of Andhra Pradesh who taught a bitter lesson to the Cong through NTR, going to keep mum regarding the way the Telugu people and their leaders are slighted continuously by the so-called High Command! People like Ambati Rambabu, Konda Surekha and Murali, Gone PR etc. are known to be much less corrupt, selfish, insincere than the mongerers mentioned first. So, let's wait and see the development in AICC,

sonia becomes President fourth time by p.v.maiya on 05 Sep 2010

Why all this fuss about Sonia being re-elected unopposed? Why have an election at all and the charade that accompnies it? Why not declare her to be the life time President? I wonder whether the media shd be giving so much importance and coverage for a non-event.

leave it stooges by chandra on 04 Sep 2010

we should leave it it congress stooges, they have got their own right to elect any person as their leader but it is the people who think twice before joining that party since it always reserves it's top place to nehru family, it is high any of the same politicians to request the family members of so many freedom fighter who sacrificed their life for out mother land, go and request heirs of thilak, bose, azad, bhagath singh, etc.

FOURTH TERM FOR SONIA GANDHI..Enough is enough. by citizen on 04 Sep 2010

Ignorant indians, follow the blind leader blindly.Sonia Gandi, without any doubt,is a capable individual, and she being elected for another term is based on merits and to some extent the legacy of the Nehru,Gandhi names. Why the young and educated politicians cannot think to diversify the arena and limit the terms of public offices to two terms to avoid more corruption and selfish interests. Now if the dynasty grooming Rahul Gandhi to be the next.....? are we Indians blind and going back to the mughal empire days of king and prince? Democratic principles - not being practiced by the fanatic politicians and the people are only looking for more corrupt income from any place they can get.CWG? Just another joke of waste and we may not have anything to be proud of..Tourists will not be there due to security and terrorist reasons.Keep printing the money and the pakistani printers are also busy to countefeit and send to India as their export of 'terror'..

PARTY PRESIDENT NOT MINISTER/INDIAN PRE. by Indianglobal on 04 Sep 2010

When there is a foreign-cum-Indian party president unanimously elected who can be further on the seat of chair person, when an Indian elected by spending of crores and crores for that seat. Moreover, she had renunciated many of dominant designation posts of Indian claims of a President, PM or any other marketing & corrupted ministerīs post.

Congress President by Kunhalankutty Odakkal on 04 Sep 2010

Congress has the right to find its President, They knows what is good for their party. There is no question of"is sonia again, "no other one in congress" like this. She led the congress to victory two times continuously, and shown the ability to lead the party without any internal trouble, Congress party owes to Sonia for its achivements and discipline. She could manage to stop BJP agitation by refusing prime Ministership, after that BJP could not get up. That blow silenced all critics, all opposition parties turned to reverse mode in popularity. So called Yadavs also in dilemma when compelled to take a decision.

Sonia Gandhi is Congress president for forth term..... by A.A.Choudhari on 04 Sep 2010

Dear Sir, There are instances in the History that good people are elected as institutional heads, more than once through the dint of their capacity for hard work and diligence. George Washington first president of USA could be cited as the best example. But here a lackluster lady is heading the selfish Congressites in a lackluster manner in which the Nation goes to dogs

voices which murmur !! by chanakya on 04 Sep 2010

There were always voices in the back ground who are afraid to speak loudly but cannot resist from passing loose remarks. When Jyothi Basu was made CM in successive years no one raised voice. When Atal and Advanijis controlled BJP for a long time no one was concerned. When Maya or Karunanidhi or Jaya lalitha or Chandra Babu or Mulayam continue for years no questions are asked. Then why only congress gets targetted ? Most political parties suffer from lack of leaders and very rarely one gets National level leaders. All your techno crats or brilliant MBA s are fit only to run mediocre business not politics. How many business or professional managers can claim to have National stature. It is not all that easy to compete and stick on top spot year after year. If congress men loose hope of getting votes then they don't hestitate to promote new face. That is what congress did all these years. So don't crib about congress president.

Sonia Gandhi as Congress Chief by Parantap Chandurkar on 04 Sep 2010

Those who tout themselves as the torch bearers of Indian Culture, rich traditions and oriental ethos are the ones who so bitterly criticise an honourable daughter-in-law of the country. These handful intellectuals want to override the much larger humanity standing behind Sonia Gandhi and see in her the image of Goddess Durga. Shame on these hypocrites who are so blind as not to see the reality that Sonia stands accepted by the masses. To hail with the pretenders.

Sonia as President yet again by Sushil Kaushal on 04 Sep 2010

Inner party democracy in Congress has never been there. Even before Sonia party presidents have been elected in the same manners. It will always be a pity that the largest political party of the greatest democracy is elected without proper dmocratic election.

Congress party democracy by k.madhukar on 03 Sep 2010

Congress party election to presidents post is similar to election in North Korea or Cuba.No opponent,no contest, and candidate is selected and whip is issued to vote for the selected candidate. One wonders why this Party of sycophants even bothers to claim they have democracy in party functioning

Congress by Mike on 03 Sep 2010

Congress is not in power technicaly. What sort of democracy is that where you are not giving any opportunity to young blood other than Gandhi family to govern this party. This party is not certainly Indian National Congress - it is Congress - Indira (I). British rule is replaced by Nehru's rule.. what a shame?

Why BJP is interested in Congress by Ganesan on 03 Sep 2010

Trampling of internal; democracy in Congress and its defense by Sona sychophants... by Vyas on 03 Sep 2010

That is because Sonia sycophants always claimed Sonia sacrificed power by appointing M Singh as puppet PM.. also they call it 'election' and democracy. They have one rule for Sonia/AICC president and othet for state PCC presidents. As principle opposition party in a democracy BJP has got right to question weakening of internal democracy in main ruling party. Who you think will question trampling of democracy in a democratic system? China or Obama?
