Nellore, AP, July 17: Coming out strongly in support of the Indo-US nuke deal, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi in a rally at Nellore in Andhra Pradesh said that the deal is in the best interest of the country.

“There is no question of compromise on nuclear programme, national security and independent foreign policy. We do not need any certificate from any party or anybody on the issue of patriotism,” she said.

Sonia Gandhi said there was no question of compromising on the issue and ‘the future generation would recognise the value of this agreement, value of what Prime Minister (Manmohan Singh) is doing today’.

"What the country needs most is to go ahead with pride the politics that unites and not the kind of politics other parties do, spreading hatred. We don't need the politics of division."

She said the nuclear deal was extremely important ‘as it would enable more nuclear power plants so that we can generate more power’.

"Our demand for electricity is growing day by day. To eliminate power cuts we need access to nuclear technology and this is what we want to do for the people. We need more and more power for farms, farmers, schools, hospitals and for every single village and house in the country."

Touching upon the issue of inflation, she said government had to face huge challenges due to unprecedented oil price rise.

Hitting out at the NDA for raking up inflation issue, Gandhi said during its regime the price of oil was USD 35 per barrel which has jumped to USD 147 per barrel now.

Pointing out that India has to import 75 per cent of its oil requirements, she said, "This imposes a very heavy burden on us. But we have been extremely cautious that the consumer of the petro products do not suffer."

She added, "We need more and more power for farms, farmers, schools, hospitals and for every single village and house in the country."

Touching upon the issue of inflation, she said government has to face huge challenges due to unprecedented oil price rise.

Opinion of ignorants by an indian on 18 Jul 2008

Isn't this stupidity to comment on an issue which is beyond one's comprehension?Only appalingly idiots of any hue and cry would say that China wants to kill the MMS-GB deal,China has spoken in favor of this deal,is member of NSG and on board of directors of IAEA and if wants can kill the deal there. The deal is not in India's interest, even sciencetists of repute were and are against this deal in its present form.

china fears USA- so has to do it through agents.china do not wish to do it openly- so he wants to get it done under a secret action- through KARAT. if it won't happen only then china will come out and oppose the deal in open.

Thanx CoolAid by Practical Indian on 18 Jul 2008

CoolAid may have a point. The country did not decide to go nulear taking everyone's view;still a lot of Indians are against it! Madam Gandhi and then Vajpayee took personal interest and initiative to go through the 2 phases. (Remember, Mr. Rao as PM buckled to US pressure?). Now, again Manmohan has taken it as a Personal issue and moving on, without even taking his party men or allies into confidence. This is politics where none of us as common folks have any REAL say to alter the course of history! However, we can all air our 2 paise worth of opinion on this. Here is mine!! Hope everything goes well for our country!

It is time to be cool! by CoolAid on 18 Jul 2008

Relax you guys! The signing of the deal is NOT the end of ANY problems; it is the beginning of many. Like any other decision in life. The deal itself is NOT bad; but we still do not know the full extent of it. Are we wasting our time here since none of us can either stop this or pass it to be accepted! Only a couple of people in the country are going to decide it. Let us wait patiently and hope for the best for the country!

US Vs China by Raman on 17 Jul 2008

China is making trillions of dollars by doing business with USA. India is also having fair share of business from USA. How can be USA bad for India? Look how many people went to USA with two suitcases and made millions. I would prefer to be under the influence of USA rather then aligning with anti-national CPI and CPM.

A Free Man is FREE!! by G. Din on 18 Jul 2008

"...I would prefer to be under the influence of USA rather then aligning with anti-national CPI and CPM...." As a free citizen you are supposed to be your OWN man. You are not supposed to prefer whose influence you want to be UNDER. It is your prerogative to ask questions and demand truthful answers and then make YOUR OWN judgments instead of suspending your judgment to one party or the other. If your own judgment dictates that you align with any, that is also your prerogative!!!

Science Policy by Dhirendra Sharma on 17 Jul 2008

The Indo-US deal has not accorded India a co-equal nuclear power status and from scientific perspectives it is clear that nuclear power is neither safe, nor economical. In the US no nuclear reactor is build for the last 30 years but to clean up and waste managment cost $ 40-50 billions which no state in the US is willing to spent. But without proper management the public security and life and liberty of the coming generaiton would be endangered. The nuke deal is not in our best interest. New Delhi cannot be a camp-follower of a neo-con occupant of the White Hosue who is the most despised leader internationally. He wants India to be a strategic partner agaisnt China. There is no advantage to push the deal now. The deal should not be made a political-prestige issue. India loves Prof. Man Mohan Singh and he is highly respected abroad. We can wait for a new man in Washington. Meanwhile, futuristic Energy Policy be formulated by an indepdent scientists group.

n deal by ksrao on 17 Jul 2008

sonia and rahul supporting n -deal and explaining to masses is pathetic since higly rated PM himself has overlooked many critical areas as pointed out by eminent scientists, jurists in their respective fields. many MP's are ignorent of the facts and following blindly. in this context how can sonia and rahul become so intelligent to decipher between good and bad of n deal. god help india

Hope, Sonia will win trust vote! by kapoor5 on 17 Jul 2008

I hope, UPA/Sonia will win the trust vote. Should they lose, Sonia will be patching up with the left to stay in power. If horse-trading is done, India will need the intervention of Supreme Court to declare trust vote null and void. Further, CBI should be able to lay charges against Sonia. No body knows from which account, 25 crores to each bought vote are coming from. I hope taxpayers are not paying for that.

INDIA NEEDS AN INDIRA. ANY VOLUNTEERS? APPLY TO THE BJP OR THE INDIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS. by R.Vasudevan on 17 Jul 2008

The issues here are n-deal, national security, future energy needs and the source of technology for it. It is inappropriate to throw impertinent remarks at anyone. Sonia is in the Indian political scene not by planning but by chance and though the due political process. Hopefully an India born woman in the very near future, like the late Indira Gandhi, will lead the country.

why you need maimuna begum? by desh premi on 18 Jul 2008

Indira divided and ruled? garibi hatao or garib hatao??? why you need maimuna begum. sonia is much better than her??? even nehru told his supporters not to choose indira but they did a mistake?? Indira did not open the indian economy so that his allies can make tones of money under quota system and india is a backward country because of her policies. similarly we don,t need old demented, crrok Advani. Sonia is much better than her Mother in law.

CONGRESS AND NATION WILL WIN FOR SURE by ajay thomas on 17 Jul 2008

CONGRESS AND THE NATION WILL WIN THIS VOTE, FOR SURE. NUCLEAR DEAL IS GOOD FOR THE COUNTRY AND IS NEEDED FOR POWER GENERATION. ALREADY MOST STATES HAVE POWER CUT. WHOLE COUNTRY IS WITH HONORABLE PM ON THIS. JAI HIND, VICTORY TO INDIA, OUT WITH NEGATIVE, "BLOCK PROGRESS" COMMUNISTS

Aam Admi, drink and eat n-deal by Uday on 17 Jul 2008

Aam Admi, drink and eat n-deal. Don't worry, instead of food, eat and drink our beloved n deal. We shall make you so rich that, you all strave to death without food. Make habit to drink and eat n-deal. To divert real issues of people this anti-national Congress digged out a dead issue to remain in power. People will dump this anti-national Congress soon.

SUPER PM SONIA by Jyoti on 17 Jul 2008

Why doesn't she take the N-deal to the polls? She does not want a joint parliamentary committee to look at it, then at least ask the people! Let them vote!

Yes, people will teach a lesson to all the anti-national parties like Left and BJP.

WE NEED AN AQ KHAN LIKE THE PAKIS by A NAIR on 17 Jul 2008

WHY DOESN'T ONE INDIAN NRIs BEHAVED LIKE AQ KHAN OF PAKISTAN AND STEAL THE URANIUM PROCESSING TECHNIQUE?????? THEY WERE ALL LEADING A "POSH" LIFE IN WEST WITH NOT A THOUGHT FOR INDIA. EVEN NOW LET'S HAVE SOME "CAMMANDO" NRI GETTING THE TECHNOLOGY FOR INDIA. WHAT HAS OUR NUCLEAR SCIENTIST BEEN DOING FOR THE LAST 60 YEARS??????

We need an AQ Khan like the Pakis by Firelite on 17 Jul 2008

You Dummy. All Indian scientist here in India are capable of inventing solutions. Not stealing. Tell me how long and how much can u steal uranium. Do you know how much uranium is needed for generating power. AQ Khan did not steal uranium. He stole designs and drawings for reactors and weapons. Ofcourse they stole what they can't create. By euqting AQ khan and indian scientists you show ur ignorance and the bankrupt mind set of the Commies and thier chumchas.

SHUOLD MANAGE IT ALL by A NAIR on 17 Jul 2008

FIRELITE, WE HAVE URANIUM BUT LACK TECH TO CONCENTRATE IT. SO MANAGE A CENTRIFUGE LIKE PAKIS AND WHILE NRIs ARE AT IT THEY MAY AS WELL GET ALL OTHER DESIGNS OF N-POWER PLANT IF THEY ARE SOOOOOO PATRIOTIC. IF INDIAN N-SCIENTIST WERE ANY GOOD WHY COULDN'T THEY BE LEADING THE CUTTING EDGE TECH????

A Q Khan, are you there? by G. Din on 17 Jul 2008

Ask A. Q. Khan, the hero of Pakistan, how he is feeling in the dungeon he is made to live in. As far as the technology goes, India has that already. It is the shortage of Uranium that is the problem. We will be arm-twisted as surely by the Uranium suppliers tomorrow as we are by the OPEC today. But, not to worry, it is an opportunity for "our own Indians" to make hay on our backs. So, be "patriotic" and vote for the Nuke Deal!!!

No comparison with AQ Khan by Vijay / US on 17 Jul 2008

First of all AQ Khan was never a non resident Pakistani. We are far better than the Pakistanis as we operate within the parameters of law believe in legislative processes. That is why we are respected in the US, where there are tons of Indian NRIs on high posts in Fortune 500 companies and in businesses. Show me a few Pakistanis who are on par. As for AQ Khan he is in hiding like an animal in a cave, and not even his own government defends him to the rest of the world.

Nuclear deal by dildum sai on 17 Jul 2008

Only half-baked people don't understand the need and importance of Indo-Us nuclear deal. They will later know and will enjoy the benefit. No problem!

Understanding by AM ADMI on 17 Jul 2008

Nut heads too understands it better as you have demonstrated.

Energy/ N-deal by Ramesh Chhabra on 17 Jul 2008

It is matter of importance of Inflation or N-deal. It seems that Congress is in very much in hurry in committing deal with Mr. Bush, did not with USA. If it would have with USA, congress would have given priority to control inflation taking highest place in India.I have two suggestions for electricity other than n-power. One: India has approx. 10,000 Corporate. If each corporate, generates at least 1 MW Gas electricity for them or for sale, India can export the surplus electricity. Two: Indian Railway has approx. 7000 Railway Stations. Every Railway Station has minimum of Two Platforms. These platforms are covered with asbestos sheets. If these asbestos sheets be replaced with Solar Energy Sheets. Railway will produce energy, fulfilling its some requirements and may supply surplus electricity to nearby village.

Nuclear deal by Rajendhiran on 17 Jul 2008

This deal is in the interest of nation. we need to produce more electricity in the coming years for the fast development. We have limited resources and it is necessary to go in for nuclear based power plants. We will become part of developing nation

Sonia backs PM by Indian on 17 Jul 2008

Hello respected UPA Chairperson, We know that you are backing PM to distroy his political carrier. Please note that, you can not make any difference in Indian politics now. Please note that our villages, required clean drinking water, good health system first. You can bring electricity after that. Its look like you do not know any thing about India. Its a shame CONG(I) president!!!!

Clean water by Mainsh on 17 Jul 2008

Hey again, you need electricity my man to get CLEAN WATER and SANITISED HOSPITALS. Thats what this deal brings in, isn't it. So support it.

THE REVERSE IS ALSO POSSIBLE- MANISH by A Nair on 17 Jul 2008

HYDRO-ELECTIC POWER GENERATING SYSTEMS WHICH PRODUCE POWER WITH BYPROCUCT WHICH INCLUDE REDUCTION IN FLOOD HAVOK, INCREASE AVAILABILITY OF WATER FOR IRRIGATION AND DRINKING ETC AT HALF THE COST OF N-POWER PLANT WHICH WILL GENERATE ONLY POWER WITH NUCLEAR WASTE, A PERMANENT PROBLEM, AS BYPRODUCT. WHICH IS BETTER MANISH????????

n-deal by Wow on 17 Jul 2008

Hey again, you cann't fill your empty stomach with nuclear electricity. A hungery child will wait for 15 years to get his electricity. Will he be alive for that long ? Surprising thing is these people who are tearing apart each other's stomachs do not know that it takes 20 years and $25 billions to build one reactor. Does India have that money ? When the reactor is ready, what will be the price of uranium ?

Outdated knowledge by Sandeep on 18 Jul 2008

Your knowledge is outdated. Current third generation reactors can be set up in 3-4 years. This is not an either or scenario. Work on the hunger part but in parallel also work on generating electricity.

BUSH WILL GET THE MONEY AND CONGRESS THE "BOFORS" by A NAIR on 17 Jul 2008

IT'S FOR THE BENIFIT OF USA AND UPA.

WOW by Manish on 17 Jul 2008

Hey Wow, are the current nuclear power generating plants working full throttle in India???? Some are closed and some are generating half of their capacities. This deal brings in regular supplies of fuel, UNDERSTAND. The farmers get low voltage electricity for 7 hours, the grains rot in warehouse due to power shortage, what rubbish you start of electricity 15 yeras from now......we increase our electricity generation the moment we get fuel.

too dumb by Meera A on 17 Jul 2008

Some people here are too dumb to understand it. They only have one agenda and that is to oppose anything that the govt does.

n-deal by Wow on 17 Jul 2008

I do not converse with ill-mannered abusive people. Sign deal today get electricity tomorrow, what kind of bullshitter will believe that ?

WOW is right by root on 17 Jul 2008

Yes WOW, why we should plan for our future? You are right, we need to ignore anything that does not give instant results. We do not need visionaries. WOW is right. The countries that plan for future always fail.

N-deal by Firelite on 17 Jul 2008

Do you know that india has a total of 22 nuclear power generating reactors (source: http://kuku.sawf.org/Fact Sheets/9245.aspx) and out of which 14 are already declared civilian use even without the nuclear deal. But 9 of them are producing 30% of thier capacity due to lack of raw material (Uranium). With this deal we get the Uranium to use in all the 14 civilian use nuclear reactor. This brings the electricity generation Now and not 15 years from now.

Ill Manners by Manish on 17 Jul 2008

Please highlight my ill manners my friend. And be reasonable, we are not getting fuel only for NEW reactors, but we will get fuel for all reactors which we place under safeguards. So all sick units will work to 100% capacity. what is illogical here????

Manish>RE:The are many other NRI that are deservering if you have issues with Bobby Jindal by India on 17 Jul 2008

But there is NO way to have the Gandii family be shown it's place. EVEN THE SACRIFICING KENNEDY'S (JFK) IN USA KNOW THEIR PLACE.BUT THIS dynasty and cartels don't know when to stop ripping of the people!!!This is why the only option we go is direct election by people VOTE of PM and CM. For atleast 2 decades this rot of MP/MLA ticket distribution racket should be stopped.

DIRECT VOTE FROM PEOPLE TO ELECT THE PM AND CM by indian on 17 Jul 2008

NO MP's or MLA system of Corruption should be allowed to control the rule.India is screwed and has no option but this Gandii family and their chamchaas. India has no future as long they have this autocratic system of MP/MLA ticket distribution which keep these LOSERS like Gandii, their chamchaas and these sold out MP/MLAs will be in charge.WE NEED IS the DIRECT VOTE FROM PEOPLE TO ELECT THE PM AND CM. NO MP/MLAS SYSTEM FOR 20 YEARS until these rotten people run away.Good NRIs such as Swaraj Paul, A Sen should be allowed to contest elections BY LAW. If Bobby Jindal can do good for USA, why not allow him to contest in Indian elections, much better than SOnia or Rahul.

Bobby Jindal by Manish on 17 Jul 2008

Dear Indian, how much support Bobby jundal gives to his fellow Indians is no Secret. Just because you see the top does not make you an expert on the "prominent in news" NRIs. Be a true Indian, respect the sacrifice made by the Nehru-Gandhi family. As far as wealth goes this family was richer before its first link with politics. History speaks. Not me.

The are many other NRI that are deservering if you have issues with Bobby Jindal by Indian on 17 Jul 2008

But there is NO way to have the Gandii family be shown it's place. EVEN THE SACRIFICING KENNEDY'S (JFK) IN USA KNOW THEIR PLACE.BUT THIS dynasty and cartels don't know when to stop ripping of people!!!

Be reasonable by Manish on 17 Jul 2008

Hey my man, give me one good reason why this dynasty should stop. So far So good, if Congress finds its pivot in this family BE IT and FACE IT MAN. Be a true Indian, love India and help and support people who are taking it ahead, thats what an Indian does. Cheers

Be reasonable by Firelite on 17 Jul 2008

One solid reason. After 60 years of Independence, Congress ruled for 50 years continously, Still more than half of India is still under poverty line. In 50 years if you cannot plan and govern properly then there is only one reason. Congress is unfit to rule and they do not have a clue about governing. For this one reason this non-sense should stop.

get your facts by Nitish on 17 Jul 2008

Stop your personal hatred and abuse of some families. Nehru and Gandhis have made huge contribution to the country starting from green revolution, food independency, banking system to computer revolution. India's poverty rate has gone down from 55% to about 20% since independence. India achieved average of 8% GDP growth during the last five years. At the same time Vajpayee has also made good contributions when he was PM. Just because one belongs to a particular party does not mean that they have not done anything good for the country.

Aam Aadmi drama by Arun on 17 Jul 2008

N-deal is nothing but to divert people's attention from prevailing issues like terrorism, inflation and Congress's losing image. This is NOT in the national interests as claimed by congress and as believed by some idiot Indians including this news paper "Indian Congress Express". The other day Mr. Kapil Sibal was saying that we can go to any country for fuel supplies, like canada, australia etc. Whom is he fooling? If US issues a policy not to supply N-fuel to India for some XYZ reasons, you think Canada or Australia will defy US? NDA under the visionary leadership of Sri. Atalji defied US and conducted the Pokhran tests. US imposed economic sanctions. Didn't India overcome it? Did anybody feel the pinch? What is the hurry signing this deal? India as the world's largest democracy is worthy of having its own Nuclear Policy and shouldn't be at another country's discretion. HOPE SOME COMMON SENSE PREVAILS AMONG PEOPLE.

Hey start trusting your ownself and don't use this word "WE".are you representing some political party,a group leader ro simply trying to relate/sympathize with Nehru/Gandhi/Khan/Kaul clan?Keep in mind that it's because of this woman and the leaders of of congress, who have chosen her as their head,India is endangered economically and is on the brink of disintegration, apart from the fact the Hinduism has fallen in perilous state of affairs because of conversions and Islamic domination. She and her boot-licker Singh are the worst kind of examples who are not atall concerned to the common man or the country but only their ownself. Both nof them are bloody insult to the very name/word "Leader".

Hinduism by Manish on 17 Jul 2008

Romesh Ji, Hinduism is being tainted and tarnished by parties like BJP, and Shiv Sena. Cheap speeches and stunts, distorted facts, false promises are in their preamble. Religion is something VERY PERSONAL, and by constantly whipping it with provocations by these parties will not make a true Indian think that these parties are custodians of Hinduism. Every self respected man knows - these parties are CHEAP and FRUSTRATED.

Inflation by Rajendhiran on 17 Jul 2008

Inflation is Universal problem and every country suffers from it and hence price rise. Nuclear deal is important not only for the energy addition but also Inida becomes part of super power nations and play important role in world affairs, make friends with many countries to tap possible help for the development.

Is it really ??? by Venkat, Boston on 18 Jul 2008

Other than Oil and Petro Prices, is Inflation really a global phenomemnon in absolute terms. Lets see Brazil - 4.3 % China - 7.1 % US

Inflation by Preeti on 17 Jul 2008

This time around Inflation is a global phenomena and all countries are suffering. What can one do. Demand for oil every year is more than what is being produced. Government of India cannot do much in this regard. All petroleum products are already subsidised in India. Higher oil prices are pusing through leading to inflation else where

Hilarious.... by U R Right on 17 Jul 2008

And 10 years from now you can say, "India has to import Uranium and the price has gone up" instead of petroleum.

Uranium by Manish on 17 Jul 2008

Do you have uranium trucks????? Urnaium cars???? uranium rails???? How much bill you pay for your petrol and how much for your electricity? How much you depend on petroleum and how much on electricity........inspect yourself please. Don't mess with the deal.

As if you have the figures! by Wiseman on 18 Jul 2008

Mr. Manish: You talk as if you know all the facts and figures and so flippantly too! That is the clear sign of ignorance!
