Sonia has Chavan as Maha CM & Rane as headache

Mumbai A section of the Congress led by CM-hopeful Narayan Rane revolted in Maharashtra today after the party leadership announced the name of Ashok Chavan, an MBA-turned-politician who was industries minister in the outgoing Vilasrao Deshmukh cabinet and the son of late Union Minister S B Chavan, for the top job. Lengthy deliberations, lobbying and a stalemate had prevented Congress observers last night from announcing Deshmukh’s replacement.

Earlier this morning, the NCP announced the name of Chhagan Bhujbal as Deputy Chief Minister, mounting pressure on the Congress to decide fast.

Speaking to reporters at his residence, a furious Rane expressed no-confidence in Congress president Sonia Gandhi and the leadership and accused it of “reneging” on the promise to make him Chief Minister.

“Ashok Chavan cannot be my competitor. They (party) should have forwarded my name. All this is a drama. There was no need for it. I have been a chief minister and the state and whole nation knows my record and what administration I provided.”

Rane, who joined Congress three years ago and was openly critical of Deshmukh despite being his Revenue Minister, ridiculed the former CM and Chavan. Asked if he was leaving Congress, he said, “I will do that at an appropriate time. I don’t trust even Sonia Gandhi anymore.”

He said Chavan “cannot even handle his own ministry and cannot be my competitor” for the CM’s post.

Congress observers A K Antony and Pranab Mukherjee, who met party legislators to arrive at a consensus, left for Delhi without announcing a name because Rane refused to work under Chavan.

Whats's this? by Abhijit on 06 Dec 2008

Indian politics is really pathetic. The time when our politicians should have focused more on strengthening our security concerns after what happened, they are spending time and energy in changing portfolios and resignation. These things could have waited. Why are our politicians can't prioritise their actions? The whole "Who will be the next CM?" was just to divert peoples attention and anger from the terror attack. The last thing people can expect from such major national party like congress is these kind of soap to keep people entertained. This is sheer wastage of strength of democracy, where people vote to get good administration but not to witness such power games. Madam Sonia, please don't make this issue your family drama, this is the matter of national security and governance.

Selfish leaders by Jai Singh on 06 Dec 2008

Is this not disgusting and shameful ? When they should be uniting to fight a common enemy called terrorism these selfish egoist politicians are fighting for political gains. The interests of the country don't figure anywhere on their agenda.

RANE PUSHED TOWARDS RAJ by OQ on 06 Dec 2008

The outburst by Rane is very indicative of the fact that he may soon start his own political party and join hands with other ex-Sena man Raj Thakeray to form a third front in Maharashtra wherin such party shall join hands with any other party to form the vicious gunda government in the state. A gameplan which I diligently wish falters and Rane goes back home to hid Local Gundagiri in Chembur Deonar Area of Mumbai.

Sonia the great! by Bhaumiick Mattoo on 06 Dec 2008

The whole fault is with Sonia's style of fuctioning. Surrounded by psychophants, she never cares to pause and introspect. She thinks she is omnipotent and knows everything. The truth is she is a very ordinary person with average abilities who has been catapulted to the top position by pathetic Congressmen out of an instinct for self-survival. A tragedy indeed for a nation of 1000 millions.

Get on with it ! by Maharashi Poddar on 06 Dec 2008

Rane's Outbursts by Mike Vig on 06 Dec 2008

Rane's cry baby bevhaviour and non- stop complaining only proves what these politicians are made of. Defecting from one party to another earlier..whats stopping him to jump ships once again? obviously, politicians like him are only good at these, after all.

Another son rises by asha on 05 Dec 2008

Another son rises - the congress cannot see above family ties. This is at the expense of competence and the country's security. It is shameless - but to be expected from 'high command' who owes her seat for who she married than for any merit.

Chavan new Maha CM by Mike on 05 Dec 2008

I think India should impose Age limitations on these Politicians. Af or after one turns over 62,must be forced to resign/retire from the politics. India can not enter in to 21st Century with these dinosoures.

Is Rane trustworthy by kk on 05 Dec 2008

Rane does not trust Sonia? Can any one trust Rane? He was thrown out of Shiv Sena because they lost trust in him. If he keeps changing his party to become CM and not achieving his goal gives him the accuse that the others are nor trustable.I don't think Rane is fit to be elected as MP. His face and his attitude towards his colleagues and higher up is disgraceful and should be removed from the party.

Young Legs by Rajan Sharma on 05 Dec 2008

I do not much about Ashok Chavan, but I am glad that we have a young CM of Maharshtra. As a young fellow, I expect him to be more energetic and free from curroption, unlike the oldies, who are all after the money and power. Ashok Chavan, if this reaches you, please note that as an Indian, we expect a lot from you. As far as Raj Thakre kind of people are concerned, I feel, we the people are to be blamed more who get carried away with the nonsense talks of these Thakres. Having seen the terrorism, we all have to be more responsible citizens to eradicate curroption, to eradicate terrorism and the choose our leaders who can lead us to a better nation.Like the Cricket Ground, I strongly belive that we need the young Legs in Politics who can lead the nation to Victory.

MAHA: CM by saudamini on 05 Dec 2008

So the unprincipled NARAYA N RANE also tasted the grapes cultivated and produced in the back yard of 10 JANAPATH. IT IS REALLY BITTER? That is what I am telling that the Lady is an opportunist. When the uncouth RANE came out of the SENA she has given him asylum fully knowing that two or three more MLA,s also will be coming out from the sena and stop the Baramathi boy to claim the CM post from NCP. this fool think that he has borne only for the post of MAHARASHTRA CHIEF MINISTER SHIP. What a pitty of these marathi manoos?

God save India from these politicians by S.Balakrishnan on 05 Dec 2008

This is the story in India. We have politicians who instead of joining hands in this time are fighting for position. The Congress has made itself a party of sychophants who clamor to power using any means possible rather than a party of administrators who care for the people. The story is not different in BJP or other parties in India. Vote pool by caste, religious affiliations, bribery, corruption, etc is the norm in the country. While the private sector freed from the clutches of the Delhi based license and quota raj is shining the public sector is reeling with inefficiency and power hungry politicians who will do anything. They do their services for a promise of power and if they do not get it they desert. There is no involvement of good of the public in this- only self and the thirst for power. No one is absolved from this in the political structure. How can India shine with this lot in charge. Private sector can only do that much. God save India from this lot.

BEHAVIOUR OF POLITICIANS by B S GANESH BANGALORE on 05 Dec 2008

OUR INDIAN POLITICS CONSISTS OF PLENTY OF POWER AND MONEY GREEDY AND CORRUPT POLITCIANS WHO LACK THE ESSENTIAL PRINCIPLES OF POLITICS namely " SERVICE, SACRIFICE AND PATRIOTISM. ". THIS IS WHY THEY CHANGE PARTIES FROM TIME TO TIME TO SUIT THEIR WHIMS AND FANCIES AND NOT IN COUNTRY OR PEOPLE'S INTEREST. THIS IS WHY TERRORISM IS TAKING PLACE AT FREQUENT INTERVALS. INCOMPETENT POLITICIANS by B S GANESH BANGALORE on 05 Dec 2008

Sir, Sub:Incompetent politicians Our country has inumerable number of incompetent power greedy and corrupt politicians only. Panacea for most of the problems in the country is massive expansion of judiciary and investigation only, but our politicians are not interested in this, as their term not only gets reduced, but they may face punishments also. If once the judiciary and investigation are expanded and criminal and terrorist cases are processed on fast track without bails and adjournments, manipulations by accused, counsels and investigation to favour accused gets stopped and lays foundation for good governance.
