Sonia invokes Indira to warn Pak

Sonia gandhi

New Delhi Accusing Pakistan of aiding and abetting terrorist activities in India, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Sunday invoked the name of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, in an apparent reference to the 1971 war that led to the break-up of Pakistan and creation of Bangladesh, to send Islamabad a stern warning over its failure to act against terror.

“I have said it before and I am saying it again. Nobody should construe India’s patience as weakness. Those who are aiding and abetting terrorism from across the border will get a fitting reply. Our inspiration is Indiraji,” Gandhi said in her address at the national convention of district and block Congress committee presidents in New Delhi.

Her warning to Pakistan was accentuated by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s remark that “all our options are open”. Home Minister P Chidambaram reiterated the government’s policy of “zero tolerance” towards terrorism and also disapproved of those who think “Hindu militancy is the way to go and defend India”.

Claiming that the Congress is the “only party” that can fight against terrorism with support and strength from all sections of the society, Gandhi made a blistering attack on the BJP for seeking to make political capital out of terror by trying to “incite” public sentiments and by “deliberately” delaying important legislations through disruptions in Parliament.

“The parties whose agenda is to divide the society, the parties which refuse to accept pluralism, which interfere in personal lives, which mobilize people on religious lines, which mislead the people in the name of Bhagwan Ram again and again, cannot become an effective instrument against terrorism,” said Gandhi in an obvious reference to the BJP.

Countering BJP criticism of the UPA government’s handling of terror, she said: “The party which has lost two of its beloved leaders at the hands of terrorists does not need any certificate from anybody.” Only that party which respects diversity of Indian traditions and heritage can fight terrorism, she said, adding that the Congress is the only such party.

Senior UPA ministers also took turns to warn Pakistan. “They (Pakistan) will have to fulfil their commitment. Perpetrators of terror attacks must be brought to justice. Nobody should think that the great country is helpless and cannot tackle the situation arising out of this problem. I repeat all our options are open,” Pranab Mukherjee said.

“Don’t try to divert the attention of the international community. Take corrective measures and don’t think that you (Pakistan) can simply shirk this responsibility,” he said. He also had a “word of caution” for those who try to “totally misrepresent” the situation by attributing it to a particular religion.

Listing three challenges to internal security — insurgency in the North-East, Naxalism and terrorism — Chidambaram said that nobody should doubt the UPA government’s resolve to act “swiftly and decisively” in the event of a terror attack.

“We face terror from groups that seek to profess jehadi terror. We face terror from groups that seek support in religion. There are militants who claim that Hindu militancy is the way to go and way to defend India. Let me make it clear that there is no stigma in being a Hindu, a Christian, a Muslim, or even a non-believer. But irrespective of religion, whoever takes to the gun, to the path of terror, is an enemy of the state. He or she has to be met squarely,” he said.

BJP never left Ram: Advani

BJP’s L K Advani on Sunday said his party “never left Ram”. “In true sense, we will be able to say Jai Shri Ram only when a magnificent temple of the lord is built (at Ayodhya),” he said at the BJP meet in Nagpur.

Modi slams the Gandhis

Slamming the Gandhi family, Gujarat CM Narendra Modi said: “Ek parivar ke ateet ko aage badane ke liye jo shadyantra chal raha hai usse Hindustan ke bhavishya ko khatra hai (The conspiracy to promote one family’s past threatens the future of the country).”

Pak TO STUDY 26/11 report today

n Pakistan said it would examine the findings of its probe into the Mumbai terror attacks on Monday. The media there reported that cases would be filed against five Pakistanis, including Ajmal Amir Kasab, for planning 26/11.

Have heard enough by Viswas on 09 Feb 2009

Madam if you are so serious about it; what were you doing with Shivraj Patil for all these years? Now you have hired the finance minister to look after internal security when the economy is in doldrums and lakhs of people are loosing jobs and you are managing economy with a part-time finance minister and the PM is taking rest after a spell in hospital. Last year when thousands of farmers were commiting suicide the Agriculture Minister was busy with Cricket and IPL. It seems the government is doing everything except governance. Are you really serious about India, which is being ruled as if it is a monarchy.

Reporting too biased by SP Tripathy on 09 Feb 2009

Indian Express has become a campaigning pamplet for Congress Party. From Journalism of courage the fall has been too steep to Journalism of congress.

HOW CAN YOU SAVE INDIA, IF YOU COULD NOT SAVE INDIRA ? by ANIYAN on 09 Feb 2009

INDIRAJI GREW JARNAIL SINGH BHINDRANWALE AND RAJIVJI UNNECESSARILY INTERFERED WITH THE AFFAIRS OF SRI LANKA TO BRING PRABHAKARAN INTO ASHOKA HOTEL AND FORCED TO SIGN AGREEMENTS. LTTE WAS GROWN WITH THE ACTIVE SUPPORT OF INDIA, IN SOUTH INDIA. SO, BOTH DEATHS WERE NOT AN ATTACK UNVITED. AND IF YOU RECALL THE 1971 BANGLADESH OPERATION, WHAT WE GAINED? WE LOST MAJOR PART OF KASHMIR TO PAKISTAN, WHO HAPPILY DONATED PART OF IT TO CHINA TO MAKE A ROAD ACCESS FOR THEM. AND BANGLADESHIS REMAIN THE MOST UNGRATEFUL LOT WITH INDIA !! WHAT DID WE ACHIEVE? SO, WE DONT NEED SUCH A WAR AND DO NOT ADVOCATE SIMILAR ONE TOO. SO, MAKE STATEMENTS AFTER READING HISTORY.

WAR??? by Ameet on 09 Feb 2009

In 2004, Congress won 16% votes, Therefore by natural maths, 86% of the voting population did not vote for the Congress. Therefore what gives the Congress President the right to talk of War? Do the Congress not realise that such talks create problems for the economy as it creates a fear in the minds of the am admi?

Talking by Suresh Menon on 09 Feb 2009

“I have said it before and I am saying it again....... the border will get a fitting reply. Our inspiration is Indiraji,” ... well she acted, did not speak much ... But what are you doing Soniaji? Just talking, talking and talking

Sonia by Prashant on 09 Feb 2009

There is no doubt that our leaders should have iron will to fight terrorism and Pakistan. As Narendra Modi rightly said, who is obstructing investigators from finding out people within the country who helped terrorists involved in 26/11. Congress should stop playing the game for gallery and take some concrete actions to unearth the facts that can stand as proof under Indian laws to convince the world. Otherwise, US and UK will still continue to support Pakistan's actions. I would also request other contributors on this page to appreciate that Indira Gandhi had won acclaims not only from the whole world but also from our national opposition leaders like Atal Bihary Bajpayee on her stand taken during Bangladesh war. Do not forget that learned Atalji had praised her comparing her with Godess Durga. Please understand that Shimla Pact has always benefited India in preventing frequent wars and official intrusions by Pak army on Indian soil. Peaceful coexistence always benefit both nations.

Indira was miles above Sonia by Reeta tandon on 09 Feb 2009

It is a hilarious thing for Sonia to talk of Indira, because although Indira had her faults, she was miles above Sonia

Gandhi curse by Adbul on 09 Feb 2009

I will only say this..People of India should have enough thinking power that they will remove this Congress and Gandhi curse in comming election. If not then they deserve more attack like 26/11 and bombblasts.Because its not the Congress/Gandhi, its the people who elect the Congress/Gandhi.

When will India reply? by Vishal Kothari on 09 Feb 2009

The question is when will that time come when India supposed to give a fitting reply for the Mumbai's 26/11 carnage. The matter is slowly gng into cold storage. We are not sure what would be the India's fitting reply if our neighbour country doen't handover the listed terrorists to us which is our unconditional demand. Are we still going to be mere spectators this time also?

hello by Suresh Nayak on 09 Feb 2009

Sonia invoking Indira!!!. Why Soniyaji, you think people are fools to buy your the same bravery stuffed words many times?.How many times congress and its hypocrite leaders want to fool the indian mojority.Your double game to please both majority and minority is biggest risk India is bearing.Your party with no guts to hang Afjal even after a court decision talks of teacching Pakistan by befitting reply. No congress people can revoke indira again by sasi on 09 Feb 2009

No congress people can revoke indira again... its all for the upcoming election... they are lived for our nations... but no one now is true to this nation...

Sonia Madam please dont joke! by Kavita Singh on 09 Feb 2009

Well Madam Small G, if you want to even be a shadow of Ms Big G, you need to have the balls to convert words to action. Till now you have surpassed her only in your ability to surround yrself with corrupt, inconsequential and bending-over-backwards sycophants.Indira Gandhi believed in having a strong army and worked towards the same. And what have you given, on the contrary our brave army officers have given YOU something….. their precious medal and a resounding slap on your face. Shame, shame congress for reducing our army, our sovereignty, our pride and ability to face the word, to nothing more than cheap and shameless rhetoric

Warnnings to Pakistan by Varind on 09 Feb 2009

Empty slogans to fool the masses. When the Iron was hot on 26/11, Mrs. Sonia and her coeteries were sleeping and till today gathering proof after proof. A strong will with determination go for action and does not take shelter behind what late Indira Gandhi did. Do not forget it was Filed Marshall Manakshah whose strategy and actioned brought laurels to India and it was Indira Gandhi who gave 93,000 Pak POWs' on a platter. Shouting like Shephered and the Lion won't take Sonia anywhere.

Hogwash by Ganesh on 09 Feb 2009

By the way what did Indira gandhi achieve after the 1971war?.She returned all the captured prisoners of war and even the territories without making them pay for it. It was a gift to pakistan. She made a Pact called Simla pact which proved to be useless for india interests. She wanted to become a mahatma and a candidate for nobel peace prize or perhaps she did not want to hurt the pak sentiments of the indian muslims. That gift is now being used by pakistan to torment us.At every crucial juncture of India's history the congress stooges have sold our national interest for parochial gains. It is because of the tailored history that their cronies write for the new generations that the truth about the Nehru's and Gandhis are hidden from the majority of the indian public.

Emergency by Devendra Patel on 09 Feb 2009

Indiraji was also responsible Emergency.

Sonia will take 500 years to invoke an Indira by ramesh k on 09 Feb 2009

People are not fools not to understand that this is an election stunt! However, congratulations to IE which has dedicated its news paper to praise and praise the 'fake Gandhi" name everywhere in their news paper! Editor saab, please check your today's news paper, you have repeated the same headline the same news item THREE Times in the front page which looks awkward that you dont have enough news items to publish or you only dedicated your news paper to the 'fake Gandhi" family.

Sonia invokes Indira to warn Pak by Jayant Kulkarni on 09 Feb 2009

I dont agree with you Mr.Ramesh. In responce to the latest terror acts in India Congress has done many things . It has requested US , UK to put pressure on Pak. It has appealed France, Germany, Australia to tell Pak to stop terrorist activities. It is in search of new countries to tell the same message. Else it is planning to approach alliens in the universe to do the same. We must respect efforts of old man and young lady foe their sincere efforts and vote them to the power.

Dont compare with INDIRA by Rajkumar on 09 Feb 2009

Done many things? Congress has no guts to face problems. I dont know who is th PM of our country. Who is taking decisions. Congress didnt do military because pakistan military is far better equipted and v are running short of everything.. From bofors corruption to till date, they have done nothing to develop india. ALways playing politics in every matter.
