Addressing election rallies in south Mizoram's Lunglei town and Mizoram-Assam border Kolasib, she said the 90-MW Tuirial Hydro Electric Power would be completed and New Land Use Policy (NLUP) to uplift the poor and marginal farmers would also be implemented.
Coming down heavily on the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), the AICC president alleged that crores of rupees disbursed by the Centre for development of the state was grossly misused by the state government.
"Peace dawned on Mizoram after twenty year-long insurgency ended due to the efforts made by my husband Rajiv Gandhi, but developmental works could not take off due to massive corrupt practices of the MNF government," she said.
Not only development suffered, but also the people did not receive what was due to them and the poor people were still hungry, she said, adding, "my heart goes out to the poor in the state."
She also said the road conditions in the state and the power supply in the rural areas were not satisfactory.
Accusing the MNF government of neglecting the health care sector, Gandhi said that the financial assistance to the tune of Rs 125 crore meant for those families, affected by famine caused by gregarious bamboo flowering, never reached them.
The compensation sanctioned for those affected by the Mizoram-Bangladesh border fencing in south Mizoram also did not reach the affected families, she added.
