New Delhi Lalu Prasad and Mulayam Singh Yadav, two prominent opponents of Women's Reservation Bill, had a nearly 20-minute interaction with Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, but both sides appeared to have failed to convince each other.

Gandhi, who is also the UPA chairperson, used the period between two adjournments to reach out to the two Yadavs, who along with JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav form part of the trio which is vehemently opposing the bill in its present form.

The SP and RJD leaders apparently utilised the time to convey their stand to Gandhi that the measure would hit the weaker sections hard.

At one point, Gandhi seemed to be suggesting to them that they should agree to go ahead with the measure in its present form and after that their ideas could be considered.

Home Minister P Chidambaram, who was occupying the front row along with Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, apparently seemed to be contesting the claims of the two Yadavs.

Shailendra Kumar (SP) said he told Gandhi that the way the government brought the bill was wrong. He was later seen being gently told by party colleague and Mulayam's son Akhilesh Yadav not to get involved when the leaders were discussing the issue.

After some time, Mulayam left the place, went back to his front row seat and was seen talking to Sharad Yadav.

Later, Sharad Yadav walked to the Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj, who was having consultations with her party colleagues.

When the House reassembled, Lalu and Mulayam were again in the Well along with their party members, giving a clear signal that there was no breakthrough.

Why Reservation ???. by One Idiot on 09 Mar 2010

The need of the Hour is not reservation for woman in Parliment. If people are really interested in uplifting woman folks, give them free education, as many middle class families prefer the boys to be educated than the girls.Give them enough opportunities in work.Give them protection that they can work in safe environments. All these things can be done by Male MPs also. Empowerment of woman at large need not necessarily be started with reservation in Parliment . The intention of this bill by itself is to corner the opportunity by the uper caste people whose woman folks have enjoyed the privilages for centuries. It is a conspiracy of the uper caste particularly Aryans of Congress and BJP.BJP normally against any reservation , why should they support this ???

DEMOCRACY OR MOBOCRACY OR GOONDACRACY by Rajesh Vyas on 09 Mar 2010

We should not call ourselves democracy anymore. The small insignificant mob led by Laloo and Lulayam is holding the mation to ransom. We should call ourselves a MOBOCRACY. We have proved to the world that we provide only LIP SERVICE to democracy. Sonia Gandhi talking to these hoodlums is a matter of national shame. Why does Congress have to be on the defensive? Any change in the bill to accommodate Laloo and Mulayam shall mean that the BJP will not support the bill and the WOMEN's RESERVATION BILL IS BACK TO SQUARE ONE. One wonders if the Congress is indeed serious about the bill's passage.

Women's reservation Bill by Varind on 09 Mar 2010

M/s Mulayam & Lalu are doing more hram to the nation than what was done by Raj Thackeray. The way Lalu/Mulayam are behaving and instigating their flock against Women's reservation bill, they need to be arrested and booked under NSA. Their actions are far more dangerous than Raj Thackeray. Nevertheless, Congress is equally responsible for this shameful events in Rajya Sabha and Parliament knowing it well the quantum of protest would come and still failed to take preventive measures. Since SP and RJD are supporting the UPA hence one can easily judge that they are all chip of the same bloc. Had Congress sincere intentions to get the Women's bill through, they could have taken Mulayam & Lalu in confidence. In present scenarion it can be assumed that if despite 2/3rd majority, the bill does not gothorugh, the responsibility will be on Congress and it is for the women to judge that what a woman head of UPA has done for them.

Is this the top priority? by Avinash Baranwal on 09 Mar 2010

Certainly this is not the prime issue to discuss in the parliament. There are other vital issues which needs immidiate attention. If Lalu/Mulayam can be seen as a obstruction to Women Quota Bill, Manmohan Singh must be seen an equal onstruction to the progress of India, as he is not PRIORITISING the issue for INDIA'S development.
