Kolkata, April 13 It seems that forthcoming panchayat polls in the State has become a prestige issue for the Congress. To boost the prospects of the party’s candidate, it has asked Congress president Sonia Gandhi to address rallies in its stronghold.

Sonia is scheduled to address two rallies on April 28 in Malda and Murshidabad. The West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) president Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi today held meeting of senior party leaders at Bidhan Bhavan where they decided to denounce the April 21 bandh call given by the Trinamool Congress and SUCI against soaring prices of essential commodities.

Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Manas Bhuniya, Subrata Mukherjee and MLA Shankar Singh.

Speaking to the mediapersons, Dasmunsi said that the Trinamool’s bandh would only create disturbances and help the CPM in the panchayat elections. “The bandh has been called by a partner of the NDA government which ruined the economy of India and it is absolutely unethical and unjust for Trinamool to call such a bandh. The WBPCC is neither participating in the bandh, nor it is supporting it. However, we will not hit the streets to oppose the bandh,” he added.

The Congress will hold a series of party programmes during this month. On April 15, a party delegation will meet state election commissioner Ashoke Gupta and apprise him of the alleged atrocities meted on party workers involved in panchayat elections in various districts. On April 18, the leaders will sit in a dharna in Kolkata to observe the Democratic Rights Day.
