The proposal for getting 60 MLD of water was backed by the Opposition after corporators from both the ruling combine and the opposition brought this issue for discussion in the General Body Meeting (GBM). The proposal has thus cleared way for the TMC authorities to have a formal talk with the NMMC officials for getting additional water supply.
Currently, Thane gets 370 MLD water jointly from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the MIDC, and the Shahad Temghar water project — which is owned by the Municipal Corporations of Mira-Bhayander, Thane and Bhiwandi. But the city, of late, has been facing water shortage especially in the area of Kalwa, Mumbra and Kausa. The problem may further aggravate if the civic body opt for water cuts to meet the crisis. The NMMC draws its water from the Morbe dam near Matheran.
“The proposal is in its initial stage now. But we have to take up the issue with the NMMC and find out how much water can be drawn from the Morbe dam,” said Ratan Avsarmol, deputy city engineer, TMC. But civic officials said that TMC could face a difficulty to receive water from the NMMC. The NMMC is in the process of laying pipelines between Airoli and the water source, but TMC can get water only after it lays pipelines from Airoli to Kalwa to transfer the water.
