Mumbai, February 29 Foodies can now look forward to an official food plaza for street food and a pedestrian plaza in a few months’ time at Cross Maidan. After the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation demolished around 47 stalls at Khau galli on Wednesday, it clarified that the demolition will make way for the beautification project at Cross Maidan.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (city) R A Rajeev said that the existing stalls at Khau Galli were in violation with the Supreme Court guidelines. “They were closely built and did not maintain the mandatory distance of 1 metre from each other,” he said. Rajeev added that there will be proper pavement and drainage lines and once this work is over, the stalls will be rehabilitated. There are about 32 authorized stalls at Khau Galli. After the beautification work, owners will have to put up stalls of standard shapes and sizes at a distance of 1 metre. Rajeev said that cooking at the stalls will not be allowed.
