Her last few releases might have seen her in rather serious moulds, but in person, actor Juhi Chawla is still the same bubbly self that she has always been associated with. “At my age, all you care about is a good script. Films like Salaam-e-Ishq and Swami had a strong role for me and I loved doing them. But otherwise, I’m still game for roles that require a dash of humour,” she says.

Dressed in a simple lemon yellow churidar kurta, the actor cuts a pretty picture but Chawla is quick to point out that it takes her careful planning to look her best. “I have always been on the chubbier side and I am not disciplined enough to gym. So I have to be extremely careful about what I wear. I am not much of a sari person, and it’s not my age to wear mini skirts, so I am only left with churidar kurtas,” she sweetly rues.

Her next screen outing will only be around May when Ravi Chopra’s Bhootnath releases. The film has Amitabh Bachchan and good friend Shah Rukh Khan in a cameo and revolves around the relationship between a deceased grandfather and his grandson. The film, directed by Vivek Sharma, has been in the making since 2006 but Chawla quells all rumours about the delay. “It’s a fun film especially for kids, so we wanted it to come out during the summer holidays. The May release was pre-planned,” she stresses.

Off-screen too, Chawla has her hands full with her two kids and her music lessons. “I am a rather strict parent. I don’t let them watch TV, so they haven’t seen much of my movies. We watch DVDs of children’s movies together sometimes,” she says. Her lessons in Hindustani classical vocals under Badrinath Kolhapure keep her busy. “I began my music lessons because I simply wanted to learn how to sing,” she says. “But now, it’s become like a stress-buster. It’s my way of meditating.”
