New Delhi, October 2: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday came under attack from politicos and women activists for her comments on the murder of journalist Soumya Vishwanathan that 'one should not be adventurous.'

Terming Dikshit's observation as unwarranted, women activists have said the Chief Minister should instead ensure safety of citizens, particularly those working late hours.

"It is shocking to hear such a statement from the person who has a 'women-friendly image.' The murder of the girl in the late hours speaks volumes of the safety concerns of women," activist Ranjana Kumari said.

Referring to Dikshit's comment made soon after the murder of Soumya, Ranjana Kumari questioned the extent of safety of a person on such desolate roads where there is no police presence.

"If not the State then on whom will the people depend for their safety," she said.

The Opposition BJP too lashed out at Dikshit saying the ‘unwarranted’ quotes by her were a manifestation of her insensitivity to the security of Delhi's citizens.

"It proves her insensitivity towards the security of the people living in Delhi. Instead of airing such unwarranted statements she should rather concentrate on improving the security scenario in the capital.”

"Being a lady herself one expected her to be a bit more sober in commenting on the killing of a young working woman," party leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra said.

"India is a free country and everybody is free to do whatever they want to do. If Soumya was an adventurous girl, it was her choice," Jai Panda, a Rajya Sabha member and Biju Janta Dal leader said.

Crimes against women by Eddy on 03 Oct 2008

Sheila Dikshit erred badly as a government servant by under-playing the cold blooded murder of a young woman journalist. Females, especially in a country like India, where they have been suppressed for centuries, should be encouraged and their safety guaranteed. If not, what kind of a country are we? I once again reiterate that punishment should be deterent in nature in order to prevent such crimes.

Unsafe Delhi by Anjana on 03 Oct 2008

I stay in Europe and I can walk in the street even in the middle of night. I feel so unsafe in my own country India. This makes me feel sad and ashamed to me European colleagues.

A chief minister who condonds the murder of a women journalist with such brash and insensitive statements. Is she senile or megalomanic

Sheila's Adventure by Mahesh Mantri on 03 Oct 2008

CM Sheila Dixit is dead right. What she meant is absolutely clear and makes sense. She wanted to say that it is alright for somebody like her with all the security provided to move around at any time in Delhi. But ordinary folks of delhi should not venture at certain time and in certain notorious areas as CM Dixit is not capable of providing them with any safety even after being a CM of Delhi for past several years. And one more thing, afterall she is also a typical North Indian with typical north indian mindset that women should not be in a profession where they may have to work late in the night (Ofcourse she is exception as taxpayer is providing her all the security a woman needs). This is nothing but a frank admission that she as a CM of Delhi is not in position to make sure that citizens of delhi are safe at any time and any place in delhi. She has shown great courage by admitting this at least. Better would have been she had kept her mouth just shut.

Soumya murder by Anand on 03 Oct 2008

What is wrong with India ??!! Compassion it aint here anymore.

Some people never change by Rajiv on 03 Oct 2008

Have all Congress leader's lost their sanity ?If a CEO is killed, Oscar Fernandes says, time for corporates to labour friendly or something like that. Nanavati commission gives a clean chit (right or wrong - who knows) to Narendra Modi, Veerappa Moily says, this can happen only in India. And now a girl is killed, and Sheila says dont be adventurous. These leaders are so weak and spineless that, they cann't even draw a line between what's right or wrong. The definition of right is - what I do or what benefits me. Definition of wrong is - what you do or if it hurts me in anyway.Sometimes I wonder - did they ever go to school. All kids are taught to be truthful, honest, right and stand up for the right things. What moral right do we have to teach our children the same values which we flout freely and openly. Shame on us.

ARE WE COWARDS? by shankarlal patel on 02 Oct 2008

remarks of DELHI'sCM are foolish and un thought.are we not all cowards?why we failed to think about RAMRAJY in india?why all not should safe in day or night?why we should not hang such crimnals in open streets and shoot them down?see other countries were women are moving alone in night safely. why? because there is no coward and selfish govt as is in india.now people in india desire PM like MODI.

Forget Security by Kan on 02 Oct 2008

UPA govt don't even have control on what their ministers speak, then what you aspect for security!. Bhatat Mata Bachao.

Prayers for her and her family and resolve for securing a better and disciplined city

Ms Dixit's "Adventure"! by Vijayan on 02 Oct 2008

Yes, the Delhi CM or politicians like her can make such comments safely, because they never step out without a posse of security guards, without bullet proof vehicles!

Sheila Dixit is right by Bharat on 02 Oct 2008

Sheila Dixit is right. When terrorists are being produced in India who are killing innocent citizens everyday, if it is not adventurous what it is? India is being bled by UPA government - because terrorism, corruption, cop killing etc. make it an uncivilized nation.

Sheila Dixisit by John Joshva Raja on 02 Oct 2008

I wonder whether Sheila Dixit herself should be in power. Because of such leaders we have more bombs in Delhi I suppose. She is no more a person who can guarentee individual's safety rather try to justify such unfortunate deaths by saying these funny things. I strongly feel that she should no more hold this position of Chief ministership. She would say if PM or Sonia is killed like this, they should not be too adventourous as well.

Safety of women by J.M.Manchanda on 02 Oct 2008

Singapore has a CCTV camera fitted on every alternate street light pole and the police keeps a watchful eye on traffic from its control room. Has it ever occured to our politicians that they could monior the situation round the clock and rush a flying squad within minutes of any untoward happening? Putting the onus on citizens who are out earning a living rather than ensuring that armed goondas donot go around looking for a victim is a wrong attitude. The CM should express regrets and devise ways to make citi safe.

Soumya gave her life for us to get more information. by Satheesh on 02 Oct 2008

My dear journalist, Please leave Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to people of delhi. Let us go after the Inhuman murderers and bring them to book. Only then will Soumya's sole rest in peace.

Sheila Dixit's reckless comments. by S.V.Joshi on 02 Oct 2008

Why this uproar. Shila Dixit is only giving verbal expression to the abysmal lack of concern in the congress party towards the safety of the common citizen. Unseat this party's governments in the city state and in the center with the next opportunity and despatch them in to oblivion forever.

HAPLESS DELHI WOMEN by BALA on 02 Oct 2008

DIXIT HAS TIME AND AGAIN PROVEN HER ARROGANCE AND INSENSITIVITY - BE IT THIS CASE OR DELHI BUS ROAD ACCIDENTS. WE SHOULD BLAME SONIA AND MANMOHAN FOR THRUSTING SUCH A CM ON US FOR SUCH AN IMPORTANT STATE. THESE GUYS ARE MAKING DE' MOCKERY OF DEMOCRACY. THANKFULLY,ELECTIONS ARE AROUND - BUT NOT THANKFULLY, CHOICE IS BETWEEN DEVIL AND DEEP SEA. STILL, INDIA IS SHINING - THANK TO INDIANS WHO ARE NOT POLITICIANS OR SELF PROCLAIMED LEADERS LIKE THESE. EVERY PAANWAALA AND MUNICIPAL SWEEPER IS MORE SENSITIVE AND DEVOTED THAN MOST OF THESE GUYS.WHERE ARE YOU, BAPU?

Soumya murder by Latha on 02 Oct 2008

Sheila Dixit should feel ashamed to make such comments. Soumya was doing her duty. If you think doing work at extended hours is an adventure, she doesn't deserve a positon where she is now. She should quit it this moment.

Irresposible by Jaiswal Kedarnath on 02 Oct 2008

Sheila Dixit and her party must appologies in public to Soumya who was murdered in public for most reprehensible remarks suggesting that Soumya was galeventing when she was murdered in in Deloshi instead of assuring the citizan they will be fully protected in the matter following thei9r honest profession. What difference ones find in her publuc out burst and that of Shivraj Patil and his Govt.Shame o n such so calledleaders.

Mumbai Kona Chhi not of T Balu and his clan by Krishna Mathur on 02 Oct 2008

In fact the remarks of Shiela Dixit is not onlr shocking but repulsive and like that her party leaders Sonia,Shivraj Patil and others like them. It amounts to anyn one who follows hisor legal profession or vocation if one encounters any opposition fromk any quarters he should forgo the same ang toe the line of such a persicurser. What is the difference between fatawas issued by Raj Thakerey,Imam Bhukhari,Simi, and other Terrorists instead of admitting that the Govt is not able to protect its honest citizans. Why she is seeking protection from security at the costs of Public Ecchequer and so alo Sonia, her heir apperant,Shivraj Patil as all of the save the Public Eccheqer if the all give their mistaken profession of playing of dirty politics! She should resigne immediately for putting the country to loss.

Freedom and dignity of women is beyond Dixit's comprehension by Syad Razzak on 02 Oct 2008

Delhi is the worst metro in India so far safety and security of any person and social acceptance of women are concerned. Women are worst treated in Delhi (among all other Indian metros), be it in public transport or other public places. But rich and powerful people like Sonia Gandhi or Shila Dixit never experience what other common women face on a daily basis in Delhi. This old lady, Mrs Dixit is ruling that city for years. She clearly does not understand what freedom, dignity and security means for a woman, neither she understand that it’s the duty of the government (which she heads) to provide safety to ANY citizen and at any time (day or night). She must not preach stupid sermons to women to gloss over her government’s incompetence and utter failure as an administrator.

Jholawalas by Manoj on 02 Oct 2008

That is ok. Sheila Dixit is a favourite of the jhola-wala NGO types 'activist' women, so she has the right to denigrate women in any way. On the other hand, people like Narendra Modi who actually have provided safety to women in their states are the target of their ire.

Soumya Murder by Kishen on 02 Oct 2008

Sheila Dixit has gone old and does not comprehend what she speaks. let her know that every goernment is fully responsible for the safety of its citizens. yet another fact that her government has also not taken care of beggers and cattle on Delhi roads and signals in the national capiotal

Soumya Vs. Shiela Vs. Sonia blessing! by Balu Toronto on 02 Oct 2008

Like Shivraj Patil, perhaps Shiela too is under the blessing of Sonia. So she doesn't care!

Soumya Murder by Subramaniam on 02 Oct 2008

The Delhi CM is rsponsible for the law and order in the state. She should resign immediately and retire, rather be power hungry at this age. She is an inefficient CM. The Center should dissolve and order fresh elections in Delhi immediately
