New Delhi, October 2: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday came under attack from politicos and women activists for her comments on the murder of journalist Soumya Vishwanathan that 'one should not be adventurous.'

Terming Dikshit's observation as unwarranted, women activists have said the Chief Minister should instead ensure safety of citizens, particularly those working late hours.

"It is shocking to hear such a statement from the person who has a 'women-friendly image.' The murder of the girl in the late hours speaks volumes of the safety concerns of women," activist Ranjana Kumari said.

Referring to Dikshit's comment made soon after the murder of Soumya, Ranjana Kumari questioned the extent of safety of a person on such desolate roads where there is no police presence.

"If not the State then on whom will the people depend for their safety," she said.

The Opposition BJP too lashed out at Dikshit saying the ‘unwarranted’ quotes by her were a manifestation of her insensitivity to the security of Delhi's citizens.

"It proves her insensitivity towards the security of the people living in Delhi. Instead of airing such unwarranted statements she should rather concentrate on improving the security scenario in the capital.”

"Being a lady herself one expected her to be a bit more sober in commenting on the killing of a young working woman," party leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra said.

"India is a free country and everybody is free to do whatever they want to do. If Soumya was an adventurous girl, it was her choice," Jai Panda, a Rajya Sabha member and Biju Janta Dal leader said.

Sheila Dixit justified by Ravi on 02 Oct 2008

What the CM of New Delhi said was a wise advice to young women. There is nothing wrong in that; she was giving an elderly advice. However, my main question is that as an employer, why did Headlines Today not make arrangements to get a women employee reach home safely after working at its office so late ? I believe Headlines Today is responsbile for this careless and lax attitude on their part to an extent safely back home.

What else can we expect from people like Mrs Dixit? by Jay on 02 Oct 2008

People like Delhi CM, Shila Dixit are the main reason for pathetic condition of women in India. Such people do not like girls and women to become a complete human being. They prefer women to remain the door-mat of men and carry out all the orders and whims of their masters, mainly men and elderly women. Backboneless politician like Dixit who are habituated to carry out orders of their masters (e.g Sonia Gandhi) will never understand the meaning of freedom and liberty. Elderly women, like Mrs Dixit, probably are the most important cause of suppression of younger women.

Soumya's death by Keshav Mathur on 02 Oct 2008

Poor Soumya! A blooming life, ruthlessly curtailed. My condolences to all who loved her. It makes for good headlines by activists to criticize CM Dikshit for her 'adventurous' comment, but since when have we started to turn a blind eye to ground realities? If BPOs can be forced to transport night shift workers to and from their workplace, how on earth can other employers who keep 25 year ladies, at work until 3 in the morning, absolve themselves of the responsibility of their safe transportation? Delhi is an unsafe city for the most part. That is a fact. As a man, I would think twice about driving around at 3 am. Will the social activists and women rights leaders do it themselves? So, just shut up, you ladies! Stop fixing blame and accusing the CM. Society at large is to blame. Find solutions. The best that you can within the existing social scenario. For starters, Headline News must ensure that women who work until late, are escorted home. So must all employers who employ women.

Arrogance vs Governance by MVC on 02 Oct 2008

Recently, there were a few irresponsible statements in the press by Ministers such as Oscar Fernandez and Veerappa Moily. Now an old lady and that too Chief Mister of Delhi makes such an irresposible statement which only highlights the accumulated arrogance of all these politicians.Besides, their statements does not reflect their age but it only shows their immature and irresponsible mindset!

Whats so terribly wrong? by Anon on 02 Oct 2008

Guys here are taking the Delhi CM's remarks too far. It is only a natural remark, dont we all playing the role of a parent caution our children to be careful in certain circumstances? What is so terribly wrong if the Delhi CM says the same thing?!

Unsafe primitive city by Rohan on 02 Oct 2008

What do you expect of a Delhi CM. She is such a primitive woman but it suits Delhi and its people. The people also are primitive that's why women aren't safe there. Its surprising that the people of Delhi accept that women are not even safe to be out on the roads. I can't understand how women still live in that city out of choice.
