Durban India's first woman Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's visit to South Africa, in 1941 as a young student, will be remembered 68 years later in an event held in the small country town of Howick Falls on February 8.

"It might not be today or tomorrow, or ten years from now or even twenty years, but the African people will rule this country," the visiting young daughter of Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru had told the local Indian-origin leaders.

Indira Gandhi's address led to the establishment of ties between the Indian Congress and the African National Congress.

On February 8, 68 years later, this historic event will be celebrated at the Howick Falls when 200 people from 30 countries will converge on this little-known town.

Adding to the glamour quotient, 25 contestants taking part in the 18th Miss India Worldwide Pageant at the Suncoast Entertainment World in Durban on February 14 will enamour the audience in the event.

Miss India Worldwide Pageant media spokesperson, Farook Khan said that Howick Falls had been selected for a pre-pageant event because of its historical importance and association with Indira Gandhi.

He said the celebration will feature African traditional musicians and a fashion show in which African print material will be showcased.

"All garments will be made from African materials and the 25 contestants of the Miss India Worldwide will appear as guest models," he said.
