New Delhi, March 20 The Special Cell arrested a conman, who the police claim was part of a gang which carried out one of the biggest scams in the state, on Wednesday evening. According to police officers, the accused, Sunder Lal, and his gang had duped multi-national banks to the tune of Rs 8 crore.

The gang leader, Sarabjit Juneja, and two of his associates were arrested in March 2006, but Lal was at large.

Police said that Lal, who dropped out of school in Class VIII, was sent to jail for a murder case in 1996 where he came in contact with Juneja, who was serving time for an auto theft case.

“Both of them became friends and after their release, they formed a gang. They adopted a novel modus operandi, in which they opened three companies and on the basis of their employees, they procured loans from various banks,” said DCP, Special Cell, Alok Kumar.

On the basis of a tip-off that Lal was in Delhi and would be boarding a bus for Mohali from ISBT, the police arrested him ,” said a senior officer.
