The accident took place outside the National Gallery of Modern Art at India Gate around 4.45 am. According to police, the car was travelling at a speed of over 150 kilometres per hour and all occupants were under the influence of liquor. According to rules, nobody below 25 years of age can be sold liquor.
The deceased are Sneha Kapoor (21), a student of Amity University, and Annirudh Rawat (22), who was studying B Com (Hons) at Bhagat Singh College.
Satyajit Singh, 19, who was driving the car, and Gaurav Sabhiki, seated in the front, escaped thanks to the car’s airbags. They have been hospitalised. While Satyajit is also a student of Bhagat Singh College, Gaurav is reportedly an interior decorator.
The car is owned by Satyajit’s father Amarjeet Singh who runs an export business.
Initial reports say the four friends were returning from the Inter-Continental Hotel on Barakhamba Road.
The police said the driver had lost control of the car coming from the National Stadium side while negotiating a turn in front of the Modern Art Gallery on India Gate’s C-Hexagon and hit the pavement. The tyre marks indicate efforts to apply brakes and swerve back on the road, but to no avail, they said.
“The vehicle climbed onto the pavement and hit the green-blue dustbins. The impact caused the car’s back portion to rise and crash into a tree 15 feet up. It somersaulted a couple of times and landed nearly 50 feet away,” an officer said. The car was damaged from all sides.
Dharamveer, a security guard at the Modern Art Gallery, told the police that when the car stopped, Sneha’s feet were still inside the car while the upper part of her body had come out of the window with her head hitting the road. Annirudh was still inside the car. Both Gaurav and Satyajit were saved as the air bags of the car blew up, saving them from head injuries. While Satyajit started screaming for help, Gaurav managed to make a few phone calls to his relatives.
The PCR van rushed Sneha and Annirudh’s bodies to the Sucheta Kriplani Hospital mortuary, while Satyajit and Gaurav were admitted to the Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. The two reportedly left the hospital without informing the police. As a result, officers could not record their statement.
Satyajit is reportedly undergoing treatment at the Apollo Hospital and Gaurav at the Bhardwaj Hospital, Sector-29, Noida. Satyajit and Gaurav tested positive for alcohol, the police said.
Sneha’s body was handed over to her family around 12.30 pm after postmortem. The doctors have indicated that alcohol level in her body was high. Till late evening, the police were waiting for Annirudh’s family which lives in Uttaranchal.
A case under Section 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt), 304-A (causing death due to rash and negligent driving) of the IPC has been registered. The police have not named the accused in the FIR yet.
“Without formal statements from the survivors and others we cannot name the driver, who will be liable for punishment,” said a senior officer.
Police said they were also investigating whether the car was racing against another.
‘Survivors serious but stable’
Before the break of dawn on Sunday, Saurav Sabhiki was told to reach Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where his elder brother Gaurav lay admitted. “I don’t remember what time Gaurav’s friends called me,” said Saurav, standing outside Bhardwaj Hospital in Noida. Gaurav is in the ICU of the hospital. “He could barely speak. He is in shock,” he said. “Gaurav is stable, but in a serious condition. We will know more after 24 hours. He is young, and will recover,” said his surgeon, Dr Verma. Saurav said he wasn’t sure where his brother and his friends were going to or coming from. The Siddhartha Enclave house of Satyajit Singh — the other survivor — was deserted. His parents have been out since 5 am, said Ajay, their domestic help. Next-door neighbour S L Sabarwal described Singh, or Bow, as he is called at home, as “a well behaved boy”. He said he has known Singh’s father, Amarjeet Singh, for 12 years. “They are a wealthy family. But Amarjeet is a very humble, decent man.” Outside the homes of deceased Sneha and Annirudh in Sector 21, Noida, there were a large number of mourners. Sneha was studying applied psychology at Amity University, where her mother works as a receptionist. Annirudh’s neighbour said his family has gone for the cremation.
