Sydney, January 6: Steve Bucknor and Mark Benson may have reduced themselves to laughing stock with a series of dubious decisions in the Sydney Test but ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed believes it was just a bad day in the office for the umpires.

Speed said it was just a bad match even though he stressed on the need for the officials do perform well to win the respect of the players.

"It's a difficult job made more difficult by technology and improvements in technology. I think we have the best umpires available.

"Generally they've performed very well. From time to time there is a bad match," Speed was quoted as saying by The Australian newspaper.

Both the umpires made a series of blunders, which influenced the outcome of the Sydney Test to a large extent.

Speed said umpires must maintain high standards if they expected players to respect their decisions.

"They're the issues we've been seeking to take out of the game. We want players to respect umpires and respect the umpires' decision.

"It's up to the umpires though to perform at a high level to ensure that the players respect their decisions," Speed said.

Gully cricket better than this!! by Hrishi on 10 Jan 2008

These cheap behaviour by australian players have confirmed their ill mindedness. i doubt if favourite cricket team of Australia is favourite anymore for cricket lovers. Educate yourself aussie team!!! Moreover the series doesn't seem to be international, but it's standard is even cheaper than the cricket we play in townlanes.

Australia Shamed by Siddharth Bhatia on 07 Jan 2008

Aussies may say winning is all that matters. But people around the world will remember this test for the way they won. They cheated, they lied. Period. Its there for all to see. Even the ones who defend the Aussies and the Umpires know the truth. The wrong decisions were not mistakes, everyone knows that too. They were too blatant to be mistakes. This was staged, the match was fixed. Why else would an umpire base his decision on the opposition's word when technology is available to help him make the right decision?(Ganguly's dismissal). The truth is he didn't want to make the right decision. Why? Thats for the ICC to investigate. Will they investigate? Maybe not, the BCCI has to ensure they do. The Indian team went there to play professional cricket, they should come back as there is not cricket being played there. The Aussies like a bunch of spoilt kids who will cheat, lie, and try all kinds of dirty tricks to win. We should come back and tell the Aussies to grow up before they try to play with men. And the men fought hard, bravely and with character. India won this second test, everyone knows that - even Ponting and his band of dirty rotten scoundrels who like to pass themselves off as sportspersons. Australia has been shamed - the whole world has witnessed what the country is all about.

Umpiring by vo on 07 Jan 2008

The umpiring mistakes almost seem deliberate. It also shows total lack of judgement not to ask for replay when in doubt. Amy be they all got paid off, Procter all the way down and covered for each other ..what s shame!

SCG by Sunil on 07 Jan 2008

Well done Kumble. Game of Cricket has been the loser at SCG yesterday. One need to ask how can so many decisions go against India in one particular match. All of that has had strong bearing on the final result. Is ACB also paying match fees to Umpires? Australians are poor losers ,and this was proved yet again.Mr Malcom Speed, please get up and take action or let the spirit of game die. What happend at SCG was anything but Cricket.

Umpiring errors against India by saugata on 07 Jan 2008

Its time for Mr Speed to rethink the cricketing strategy for erring umpires. Whoever does a mistake need to pay for it. The players are often fined from match fee if they behave badly on the field. Why can't we put the umpires under scanner too. One wrong decision or two would not have made this outrage. But when there is a flurry of umpiring errors against one particular team, it sounds fishy. May be Mr Speed should form an investigation team to find if there is anything lying under the surface.

Cricket deserves independence by Ash on 07 Jan 2008

It is obvious that still cricket is slave to white men.

11 Indian Players vs 13 Australians! by Prem Sankhayan on 07 Jan 2008

Why the BCCI is behaving like a slave of ICC? The BCCI bosses should agree to nothing less than getting the Sydney Test match canclled. They are paid also for upholding the respect of our Nation. Otherwise let the Indian team pack up and return to India immediately. Let us behave like leaders and not like slaves!

BCCI- Too much to expect strong action by Rohit Kakkar on 06 Jan 2008

Don't expect anything from BCCI. It is at the mercy of ICC and other boards because of the Indian Cricket League issue. The others will gang up and threaten to allow their players who played in the ICL to represent them in their teams for future ICC regulated mathes. Thus it is upto the Indian public and the individual players to uphold the dignity of Indian Team.

Kick aussies asssss by Nilay on 06 Jan 2008

Best solution...come back and organize a Mini World cup in India...and dont involve Aussies...and buckner....India is biggest sponsorer anyways...am sure we can throw some more money make thing happen....

inefficiency by Shashi Ranjan on 06 Jan 2008

Rightly, its time for speed to quite too. Inefficiency starts from the top. He can be made responsible for the horrible bunch of "elite umpires" who have made news in the recent past and one has not witnessed any palpable improvement in there performance whtasoever.

Selective "bad days" by Sitarama on 06 Jan 2008

Well Mr. Speed, Steve Bucknor always seems to be having a "bad day in office" while giving those horrendous decisions against India. It looked as if India's 11 were playing against Australia's 13. This has to stop if Cricket, already brought to disrepute by different scandals, has to exist as a gentleman's game.

Match not finished - null and void by Greg Chappalchor on 06 Jan 2008

The match is not done yet. The Indian Board owes the cricket community and needs to take up issue with the ICC to delcare this match null and void. If it feels otherwise it must explain to the people why it was unable to do so. India has gotten carried away with a archaic adage called sportsmanship. Sportsmanship is for weakling who cannot defend themselves - this was alright during Gavaskars time when the India Board was a a weakling and did not contribute to revenues of ICC to the extend Australia and England did.Steve Bucknor has missed officiating matches due to delays in filing visa, ruined a perfect World Cup match, besides many other things.

Speed defends Bucknor by Hrishikesg Gupte on 06 Jan 2008

It was not one bad day in the office for the umpires but it reeked of bias against the Indians. The umpires managed to reduce umpiring to farce like never before, their poor performance completely overshadowed some great performances. Symaonds had his share of luck but truly deserved the man of the match. The Indian fight back was truly splendid, hats off to VVS, Rahul, Sachin, Dada

After all Malcom speed is an Australian! by Venkat on 06 Jan 2008

Of course he will!! Malcom Speed is an Australian and the two umpires have given several decisions against India BY WHICH ALONE Australia could win! So much for neutral umpires and ICC ensuring fair cricket! India should encourage not only IPL but also ICL and forget other International Matches for a while! Lack of funds will hurt ICC and they will change things; better to hurt ICC where it matters; their pocket!!

cheater australians by arun on 06 Jan 2008

all world cricket teams should abondon playing with australia as they do not have any sportsman spirit and they win just by racisim, cheating and foul play....

poor umpiring by suresh on 06 Jan 2008

The decisions umpire make should be fair, not baised, then only players will respect umpire. This is one of the worst umpiring one has witnessed in recent times. Both rquire refresher course on umpiring.

umpiring improvement by satish on 06 Jan 2008

Well Speed does not suggest any improvements just talks about the old stuff. Speed should improve umpiring policy and use technology more in the decisions.

umpiring by srikanthdr on 06 Jan 2008

yes bad day happens only against Indian team. Around 8 decisions went against India. Umpires helped Symmonds to reach 162 and also in second innnings. if it is one or two one can forget asumpire lapses.

cricket umpiring by Rao on 06 Jan 2008

Its time for speed to quit also as he had gone blind not to notice so many clear blunders by bucknor and benson. He should ask them for explanation. Speed should also question australians sportmanship. winning this way is not winning.

Sydeney test umpiring by Arvind Varavadekar on 06 Jan 2008

You are absolutely right. To add fire to the fuel Symonds is accusing Bhajji to divert people's attention from the umpires' miscues. Mr. Speed I believe is also pro westerners.
