There were sporadic acts of violence and stone pelting in the city during the ‘bandh’ called by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) today to protest revocation of the land transfer order by the Jammu and Kashmir government.
“At 11 am a few youths pelted stones at a BEST bus at the Milap Junction on SV Road,” said Senior Police Inspector Surandra Jaiswal from Kandivali police station. “A patrolling vehicle caught and arrested a 19-year-old youth, Anuj Vishwakarma, who was part of the gang, but the others managed to escape.”
Police Inspector Annasaheb Rajmane from Borivali police station said, “Our officers arrested 37 people on SV Road this morning after they indulged in a rasta roko. Though the whole event was peaceful, we had to arrest them for holding up traffic and causing public inconvenience. Another person was arrested for vandalising a dairy farm.” Eleven people were arrested at Malad for attempting a rasta roko in front of NL College on SV Road.
At Vakola, 50 were arrested for stone pelting and a rasta roko on SV Road, while at Sarvodaya Hospital in Ghatkopar, 58 persons were detained for a rasta roko. Fifty-three people were arrested by the VP Road police for conducting a rasta roko at Gulabwadi, Girgaon.
Around 10.30 am, activists chanting pro-Hindutva slogans, attacked the Jammu & Kashmir Government Arts Emporium in the Fort area. “There were 10 to 12 persons. Their faces were covered and they indulged in vandalism and damaged property. The management staff of the emporium fled. No arrest has been made so far,” said PI Manohar Patil of MRA Marg police station.
DCP (Enforcement) Sanjay Mohite said, “There have not been arrests in all cases. For example, at Ghatkopar people had just been detained whereas in areas like Kandivali, Borivali and Vakola, there were clear cases rioting and stone pelting and people were arrested.”
The bandh saw a mixed response in Navi Mumbai and Thane, where 63 people were arrested for rioting and damaging public property and also as a preventive measure.

Not only country will loose productivity of one full day, also ordinary people will suffer by this unnecessary bandh. This bandh or any other bandhs by any political party or religion is anti national.
Recently, I was visiting India. A certain thing about this nation got onto my nerve big-time and I couldn't help but write out my angst. I have often heard the elderly in India asking the youngsters as to why they are moving out and leaving the country to live abroad? I ask you, if your workday is to be determined by whimsical political parties or unions with political back ups, then would you really work in such an environment? Chances are NO!! You won't. Still groping in the dark? Well let me fill you in. 30th October, 2007: CITU calls a bandh - reason: I'm sorry I couldn't be bothered by it. 31st October, 2007: Trinamool Congress calls a bandh - reason: to protest the violence at Nandigram. Valid point... the happenings at Nandigram is honestly despicable. More on that later. The moot point is calling a ‘Bandh’ and thus hampering the regular life of the civilians is not the way to protest. They at the end are not asking the civilians to join the cause but terrorising them into giving in to their demands – ‘Stay Indoors’. Hmm... does that make a protest successful? I've got my doubts.
The bandh calling tradition was started years ago. The purpose then was, I hope properly served. But over the years the bandh has been called with flimsiest of pretexts. As a result, the common man loathes the bandhs. The fact that a common man and woman earning their daily bread cannot venture out because of these political jerks is what angers the millions most. And all this is happening in Bharat despite the Supreme Court rulings against such activities. Wow!! And they ask us why we don't wanna go back? For what? So that we get to enjoy such uncalled for holidays? They need to understand that the generation Now doesn't believe in strikes like these. They believe in doing everything in a democratic manner by enhancing the institutions where you can petition and get your complaints heard or settling any disputes by the rule of law through the courts. We call ourselves the largest functioning democracy in the world. I think as the former American Ambassador to India, John Galbraith had said, we are the largest ‘Functioning Anarchy’ in the world. Unless our leaders make it a functioning democracy, India is doomed.
During the recent Gujjar stir, the BJP, VHP Government of the Mass Murderer and Serial Killer Vasundhara Raje were moaning about Gujjars having disrupted lives and the day to day functioning of production and the economy. And they went further in justifying their acts of unlawfully killing 75 Gujjars in police firings. These shameless BJP and VHP Fascist thugs ruling in Gujarat and Rajasthan then refused to resign for messing up the whole situation by their incompetent handling. Now what about these BJP and VHP Fascist thugs calling for this disruptive nation-wide bandh, indulging in violence, blocking highways, stopping trains, setting fire to vehicles, fighting pitched battles with the police at several places, disrupting normal life in the country and leaving some people dead by their actions? These violent Fascist thugs also pelted stones at the law enforcement personnel at a police station and damaged vehicles parked in the premises. These thugs should count their luck for being still alive because the police simply cane-charged and used teargas shells to control the situation and didn’t drop them dead with bullets as these BJP and VHP Fascists did in Rajasthan during the Gujjar stir.
