Ludhiana, September 01 Thirty nine-year old Parminder Kaur, a resident of I-Block, Sarabha Nagar, who is suffering from breast cancer and is undergoing radiotherapy these days has been advised by her doctors not to live very close to the cellular transmitter towers. Parminder has two such towers right next to her home.

Despite a written request by the residents of this area to Ludhiana Municipal Corporation for removal of these towers, no action has been taken till date.” S S Tuli, a resident of I-block, Sarabha Nagar, explains, “It was in the month of June that we had submitted a signed request to the Zone-D Joint Commissioner of LMC to remove these towers. There has been a sudden spurt of cases of cancer in our area, and during the treatment, the doctors have advised us to stay away from these towers that emit electromagnetic waves.” Tuli adds, “These towers belong to a private company and when our efforts to reach the officials of this company failed, we decided to approach the LMC. However its been almost three months now and the LMC has not initiated any action.”

While the jury is still out on higher incidence of cancer due to the electromagnetic waves emitted by the cellular towers, yet Tuli citing a series of studies conducted overseas says, “So many studies prove this. Moreover it is only after these towers had come up here that we had seven cases of cancer in our area. Three people have already died and we do not want the number to rise.”

Parminder Kaur is Tuli’s wife and he is pained at the fact, “The doctor has told me to keep my wife away from these towers but where do I take my wife. I have no way out. Our file seems to have stuck somewhere in the LMC. “ When contacted, Kuldeep Singh, Joint Commissioner, LMC Zone-D, said, “I had sent this file to junior officers for action. I did not know that nothing has been done in this case. I will inquire into the matter.”
