New Delhi, March 18: Seeking to buy time to avoid any immediate confrontation on the Indo-US civil nuclear deal, the UPA and Left on Monday decided to hold yet another meeting in April to discuss the draft agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on India-specific safeguards.

At the seventh meeting of the UPA-Left mechanism on nuclear deal in New Delhi, Pranab Mukherjee presented “some talking points” of the draft agreement to the Left, asserting that they addressed India’s concerns.

While maintaining its opposition to the deal, the Left sought time to study those points and proposed to discuss them at another meeting in April. The time was sought reportedly because of the party congresses of the CPI and CPI(M) later this month. The UPA wanted a date for the next round of meeting, but the Left insisted that it “would take its time” to understand the details of the deal.

“I am confident of sorting out the issue,” said Mukherjee, emerging out of the meeting. “The Left wanted further clarifications and further discussion (on the draft IAEA agreement),” said CPI national secretary D Raja.

According to Left sources, the UPA said the Government had got assurances on uninterrupted fuel supply and strategic reserves during the IAEA negotiations. Left leaders, however, contended that the IAEA could not guarantee this because they are not fuel suppliers.

The Left favoured nuclear deals with Russia and France, but the UPA maintained that signing the IAEA agreement was essential if the country wanted to have such deals with any other country. “Safeguards are indeed safe,” argued the UPA.

The Left was also not satisfied with the details provided and asked for a “comprehensive report”. The UPA was said to have agreed to provide the Left with more details within a week.

If the Govt believes that going ahead with this deal is good for the country, they should forget about the Reds and go ahead with it. Doing the right thing is important ;not hanging on to power with an ally that has no allegiance to the country that feeds them.
