With Gilchrist set to hang up his gloves after the ongoing match against Indian which has just one more day to go, the crowd sensed it was probably the last time they would see him bat in a Test.
So when he walked out to join Andrew Symonds in the middle, Gilchrist was greeted with a standing ovation and the Indian players too gathered in the middle to welcome him by clapping.
Though Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke completed centuries, it was Gilchrist who got all the attention today.
The overwhelmed crowd cheered every run he got and even clapped and whistled on dot balls.
Eventually, the left-hander's stay in the middle was cut short by Irfan Pathan who had him caught by Virender Sehwag on 14.
After grabbing the catch, Sehwag was seen clapping while Ishant Sharma, running all the way from the boundary rope, came to shake hands with Gilchrist.
The entire stadium was on its feet, applauding the legend, shouting ‘Gilly, Gilly’.
