Kolkata, May 15 The State Election Commission (EC) on Thursday said that the number of booths going for repoll could go up. Hence, it has decided to postpone the repolls to May 19. The repolls were originally scheduled to be held on May 18 coinciding with the last phase of the panchayat elections.

“We have decided to hold the repoll on May 19 because it will be difficult to provide adequate security if it is held on May 18. The security personnel will be busy with the third phase of the polls. We do not want a repoll of a

re-poll,” said S N Roychowdhury, Secretary, State Election Commission. The counting will begin from May 21.

A repoll has been ordered in four booths in Hooghly district, five booths in Nadia and one booth in North 24 Parganas. The final reports from South 24 Parganas and Howrah districts are still awaited.

On Wednesday, the EC had said that repolling was likely to be ordered in at least 27 booths in South 24 Parganas. The numbers are likely to go up especially in Nadia and South 24 Parganas, said Roychowdhury.
