The college had faced criticism over allowing Valson Thampu to act as principal without fulfilling the eligibility criteria.
St Stephen’s media coordinator Vinod Chowdhury said Thampu would apply for the position. He said the duration of Thampu’s tenure as the Officer on Special Duty expires on May 20, and the college would begin the process of finding a regular principal the same day. “He will apply for the position like any other candidate,” Chowdhury told Newsline.
Chowdhury said Thampu is now eligible for the post since he has completed his PhD — in Theology — from Allahabad University.
The Delhi University Teacher’s Association, though, said Thampu should resign immediately instead of waiting till May 20. “The annual exams of DU is coming soon, and an ineligible principal should be removed before it starts impacting studies of the children,” DUTA president Aditya Narayan Mishra said.
DUTA today held a demonstration in front of the V-C’s office and sought Thampu’s resignation. It also submitted a memorandum regarding “blatant assault on academic freedom and freedom of expression of teachers by Rev. Valson Thampu”. The memorandum contended that Thampu has issued showcause notices to “two senior lady colleagues” — Sangeeta Luthra Sharma and Tasneem Suhrawardy, of History Department.
