Chandigarh In the wake of a police sub-inspector publicly manhandling a girl by way of 'moral policing' at Jind on Friday night, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Hooda has said stern action will be taken against any cop taking "excessive action".

"Whoever takes excessive action, action is taken against him," Hooda said here last night while replying to a question about his government's response to police high handedness.

Television footage showed SI Moola Ram pulling a girl by her hair even as a group of people watched. The cop's action came after local residents had complained that the girl had been found in a room with a boy and allegedly indulging in immoral acts.

Ram and another constable who was also at the spot were suspended in connection with the assault on the girl, Jind Superintendent of Police Satish Balan said on Sunday.

When asked whether the state government was contemplating any further steps against the suspended policemen, Hooda said "The Department will take its own action."

A departmental enquiry has been ordered, which will be conducted by a senior officer, Balan had told reporters adding further action would be considered after completion of the probe.
