Pune July 18 “I have a stick for goons and bullets for gangsters,”said Satyapal Singh, the new police commissioner of Pune while taking charge from the outgoing commissioner Jayant Umranikar on Friday.

Singh, who earned a name for his crackdown on the underworld in Mumbai a few years back, said he would keep a hawk’s eye on the activities of the land mafia. “Proper measures to control property offences will be initiated,” he said, speaking to the media.

“I don’t have a specific agenda for Pune. But one thing I would look into seriously is the traffic problems in the city. I would try to bring discipline on the roads,” he added.

Singh said that he would collect inputs from officers, citizens and mediapersons about the city and then decide further action to maintain the law and order situation. “If there are any lobbies or groupism among the police, I would put an end to it. I would give a clean and supportive leadership to the Pune police,” he said.

The new police commissioner said that he was against the use of scarves by women and girls while riding two-wheelers. Singh’s drive against women covering their faces with scarves while riding two-wheelers in Nagpur had drawn a lot of media attention. Singh said he was interested in launching the drive in Pune.

Meanwhile, Umranikar said he has given the necessary inputs to Singh while handing over charge.
